INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hi everyone, I'm new here, first post!

I am just getting started on my chicken adventure, and am looking for hens in Northwest Indiana/Chicago/SW Michigan. Any leads or suggestions would be appreciated!

I will be building a coop this weekend and will hopefully post pictures. Happy Friday!

Hello! I'm in your general area.

Are you looking for started pullets or chicks? Sounds like you're wanting them started from your post, but sometimes getting started birds can be tricky as there are many people that are not quite honest or reputable when they sell started. If you go that way, be sure to get a recommendation from someone that knows the breeder!

And.... Welcome!

Hello! Yes, I am looking for started pullets. I found a few a bit farther away on CL, but just wanted to put it out there in case anyone had info on any nearby.

Thanks!

Also, did you see the video on you tube of how to modify the electric thermostat? Basically just drilling extra/larger holes in it. It works great, mine is much more sensitive this way.
Can you post the link, I have one I built that needs tweaking.
Went to RK earlier. They have the following:
ISA, special on RIR (2bins Full), Columbian Rocks, a bin with multiple breeds i think ones they combined because of the #'s and new ones in, Ducks (khaki Campbell's, Pekin and Rouen), Turkey (not labeled but believe the bronze and white broad breasted), french pearl guineas

They now are showing silkies on their breed list of pics, i didn't ask but assuming thats because they will be getting some in.

I did get 2 of the khakis in hopes for girls (eggs) and 2 of the guineas! ! Haha! Swore I'd never have guineas because they are annoyingly loud, but, after seeing @jchny2000 at her place they were just so cute and i have ticks on the property very bad. Soo..i did it! Shhhh to DH...I'll just act like they randomly showed up or someone must have dumped them!! I'm so bad
I should have keets for sale very soon. I am seeing hens scoping out nesting sites.

Shocking, but the silkie egg that i accidentally dropped the bator lid on and caused a good sized bust, just hatched. Thought for sure it wouldn't make it. That was last week..

One of my test hatches i dropped the egg, and had a good crack on top. It hatched fine.

So precious!

Thats so sad. But congrats on the new chick.
I am pretty new to peas, I had some a few years back, but they went to the neighbors when Dad had open heart. Was just not home enough. Trying to learn more about them. So maybe they will surprise me this year!
Oh my, I remember those days!

They do get strong! We are hoping to get the rest of the wire to run electric fence this weekend. Double Stuff is loving being on the big open pasture! She lazes around, and follows the other animals. Bo, my buck wants her no where near me tho, and he butts her, then she nips him! They have reached a truce finally, and take turns for attention and carrots, lol. I plan to let my boar out once the wire is ran too. I need to work with the other sows more before I will release them.

Oh thats great!
I know i'm being impatient but I just cant help it.... didn't know electric wire would keep pigs in???
Electric wire will keep pigs in that have been trained to respect it. If they've never hit a wire before, their first instinct will be to charge right through it. They are also masters of figuring out when the electric is out and then escaping. I plan on using electric netting for pasturing pigs this summer, but they will get their first training on it while they are still inside a pen with a strong outer fence
This will be the first any of them have been on it. we have a 50 mile charger so I plan running at least 3 strands. once they are trained to it, I will secton them off a large pasture just for them.

Lol, DH just shakes his head at me. Once I brought pigs and cows into the picture he knew I was seriously hooked! I have a customer wanting 200 ducks a month, oh geez! Dont think I have the acreage to supply that!

Quote: They are so awesome. Once they are past the first year, they quiet down a lot. And yes, they make an awesome table bird, much better than pheasant.

Quote: Exciting!

I actually grew up in lake county, and worked in Dyer a few years. Ive been in central IN for 16 years now, was up north recently and was AMAZED how much its changed!
Please jump right in and ask any questions you need to, lots of friendly helpful folks here.

@jchny2000 200?!? Goodness.

She already knows a feeder pig is coming this year. I just spent money to build that coop, and the work situation hasn't improved. I need to keep my head down a while! Lol

Im about an hour south of Indy but there are quite a few "Northerners" here as well. Spring is a good time to check in! ;)

Any breeds in particular you're hoping for?

I've got fans but have not installed them. I adjusted the thermostat to give my area 99 degrees. It holds it really well when the thermostat drops its holding 99 degrees well so the thermostat kicks on and it maintains well. Tomorrow I'm going to play with humidity a bit. I'm using it mainly as my hatcher
