Hey all, I think the chicken-killing dog issue is resolving. The owner of the land, who is my landlord's father, came to talk with me and wants the dog removed. It killed his 12 yro cat last week as well. I'm hoping that happens, then I don't have to worry about it anymore. He also gave me money for the lost chickens. I felt a little bad about taking money, but he insisted and wanted to make sure I was happy living there. Of course, my DF just texted me and asked if there were white feathers in the front yard when I left for work today. I was thinking, here we go again, another loss. Hopefully it is just left over feathers from one of the roosters that was killed last week. The dog drug him around the entire house and there were white feathers everywhere. If not, it's my all white eater egger and I'm not going to be happy. Hopefully it's not raining when I get home so I can investigate and check my trail cams.

My heart is breaking for everyone else who has lost birds lately too.

I can't wait, this weekend when we are having our family Easter, I am going to take pics with both my nephews and some chicks. My DS asked if she needed to bring me more fresh chicks and I somehow was able to tell her no. I have enough chicks of various ages and some hatching later this week!

Sorry for the sideways pics, I can't get them to rotate right...does anybody know what this chick is? I got a couple from Rural King and they were labeled "Assorted Pullets." Looks like a straight comb.

And a couple of photos from today:
Beautiful.
:he I'm the stupidest smart person of the day. Normally, it's the kids trying to con me into buying chicks... today, it was all me. Despite swearing up and down that I'd never get more BB turkeys, I got three more today... and a couple Khaki ducks. I miss the eggs, Major Tom is lonely, and the one baby turkey was injured and all alone. Looks like s/he was a cannibalism victim because it's bleeding from the bottom and beak. I could have made it out fine but it kept peeping for somebody, and when I glanced over, I saw its poor bottom... and I just couldn't not get it at that point. Poor little guy just snuggled right in and started the happy poult yawning thing right away... I'm such a sucker. I was going to put it back in with the other ones when I noticed a few of the overcrowded poults were picking on some of the smaller ones... so I picked up another couple for beak issues. The only uninjured one was developing an intriguing buff color to its legs and wing feathers. The ducks... well, I missed having a couple after all. Khakis do lay like crazy (unless I've got two drakes), and I have missed both turkey and duck eggs. I'm already bracing for the BB turkey heartache, but I just couldn't say no when my lone MW tom has been lost calling like crazy, just moping around all day. I know he has whatever this bug is so I'm sure he'll give it to the new kids eventually. I have noticed that the loneliness adversely affects a turkey's healing from the bug though, so maybe these short-lived kiddos can help him pull through. It wasn't until we took Saphira (the other turkey) away that he succumbed to the bug anyway. :hit
Stopped in TSC today. Needed a stall fork. I kept running. Had Easter eggers. I want some. Ducks were out, which was good. Has just been pekin to this point but if khakis showed up I'd be in a bad way.

I will check with the friend about the birds. I haven't got my egg report back yet either.

Thank you all for the well wishes re my daughter's stomach flu. It has been pretty severe. She insisted on going back to IU on Thursday to work on a research paper. This morning she called and was having a total relapse. DH planned to come home today after a couple of business-related days in South Bend, so he stopped in Bloomington. He took Lauren to the doctor who had seen several more stomach flu cases today. After an injection and prescription, DH brought her (and her confused cat) back home again.
DH had invited me to go along to South Bend, but timing was bad. Otherwise I would have checked with
@Leahs Mom and other members in the area to meet and have coffee somewhere. Maybe next time...
Let me look up the Tylan info. I have used it for my turkey when her eye was pecked out.
There is some concern, but honestly its a natural cycle with them comingling. Each animal does a different job cultivating a pasture. I do go around with the tractor and shovel up poop every week, cow paddies are not fun to slip on lol! And the donkey leaves a larger version of pellets like the goats. It goes into the compost pile by the garden. I rotate the piles every year so we always have a nice huge pile of fresh compost thats cooked well and full of worms etc.
I have 90% of my birds confined now. There will be some misc roosters free and that's it. My DD was home this weekend and took some of her favorite roosters home.
Quote: Golden comet, cinnamon queen, red sexlink are all the same bird, and an awesome brown layer. White leghorn are a great layer of white eggs.

Thought some of you might be interested in looking through this article (and maybe even the video) regarding antibiotic use in livestock.

Always makes me glad I have my own and/or know folks that I can buy meat from that raise their animals without routine drug input, outdoors on healthy land (also without chemical input) with species-appropriate feed.

Thanks for sharing this. Exactly why I try to raise or grow as much of our food here as possible.

Looks like those negatives might be maybes after all. Tried again this morning, but I'm going to save the last test for some other time (like next week or later). I'm so tired of feeling crummy and not knowing why. This is so weird.

Quote: Thanks, I will mention to him about Milton!

Whine time--first area show at Lima OH this weekend. Had paid my entry fees and hotel (non refundable); then was down with a bug all week. Did well to feed and water, no chance of getting any birds ready.

I am so sorry! Hope you are feeling better soon.

Nope, test from this morning looks like just as much of a super faint line as the other four now. Lines do have color to them, so they're not just evaporation lines. Husband isn't taking the faint lines seriously, so we're going to have to test again after another week or so. I'm not sure what we can do about it if I am pregnant again, anyway, but having a baby is better than having cancer and anything else that can cause these sorts of symptoms. I'm already enrolled for completely necessary classes this summer, but I'm going to have to look into how a pregnancy might be affected by chemistry labs. A lady stopped coming to labs because of becoming pregnant early last year.

Really hoping she was just being super-protective, because I've never heard of a ban on pregnant ladies in labs. If I can't take labs, I'm screwed out of a degree at this point. As is, if I'm having another baby, I may have to figure out what I can do to be four-years-and-done instead of doing PhD, post-doc, DVM, etc. I'm already so old to be in college.

Plus, I have a yard full of undiagnosed chickens who are carrying something back and forth, so nobody wants them. Wave done so much work on the shed, but weather just isn't cooperating. Wish we'd known about possible Baby #4 before committing so much money to this cause.
If it comes down to them needing to go PM me. We can work it out. DD just expanded her coops, and I have several more built here. 2 of my non BYC friends have also started redoing coops and will be ready for more birds very soon. Most important thing is you get better!

Went to RK for feed and 15 little isa's followed me home.

Hello Indiana Peeps

I'm new to BYC. I moved from Phoenix Az to the Lafayette area. I'm technically in Tippecanoe County. Last year i started my little backyard farm with Khaki Campbell ducks. My hen has started laying so very excited. I decided to expand to chickens. So I'm the new mama of 4 feathered legged bantams and 2 silkies. Excited to my chicken journey!

Sincerely Tina

Jump right in and ask all the questions you need to!

Hey Gang,
Getting really close to starting my coop. Sat down to draw up my plans and in researching some details, I came across a 4x4 coop plan by Purina (tried link below but couldn't make it work) that seems pretty slick. Very similar to what I was trying to draw up, but mine was a little different. Mainly nest box placement which I would put on the sides as my run will be on the front. I plan to build a run and have no more than 6 hens when the dust settles. Any thoughts on size, ventilation of this design and how overwintering the birds might go? I thought I might lengthen it by a foot or two front to back if it didn't add too much cost, but would that make it any better? Thanks in advance for any comments.

Not the picture at the top. Scroll down for the plans.

I like it, but agree, make nest boxes work for you. Add all the extra space your property allows, all of us have suffered chicken math once we got them! I went from -0- to hundreds in a year, lol. Those fresh eggs are very addictive!

Asking for good thoughts as 25 eggs go into lock down. They were incubated at a wacky range of temps and I'm surprised how many made it this far. Hoping for at least 20 to hatch healthy. About a dozen more are due by the end of the month, but they missed the temp roller-coaster. My auto turner also died and I've been doing that by hand...hopefully often enough!

Also looking for recommendations for cabinet incubators, which I know can be very expensive. I like my Brinsea products BUT they aren't holding up to even moderate use.
I went with the Sportsman 1502 Digital Cabinet. For the price, reviews and quality nothing else added up. If its fertile it hatches! I set 60 pekin duck eggs for my first hatch. I was only hatching around half of what I set in the styro bators. They all HATCHED! Thats when I was sold. My Muscovy hatch in it, and they are not easy to incubate either.

My DS just returned from a business trip in Columbia, SC, and he brought me a T-shirt!!!!

LOVE THE SHIRT!!!! How sweet he thought of you!

Hi y'all. I just joined BYC a few days ago and was directed here. I have been reading for a bit and thought I should come out of my corner and introduce myself lol. This seems like such a nice group! We just ordered our first chicks a couple weeks ago, but they won't be here until the beginning of May. We will be working on the coop until then. We live in fountain county and have three kiddos, ages 10,7, and 1.....and soon to be 15 chicks. I can't wait!

Please ask away, and its ok to talk about family, other animals etc.

I'm not sure how to copy and paste a quote, because I'm on my husbands tablet lol...but I have to agree with tmarsh. We originally started out wanting 6 hens. It was all we would need. But as soon as we started learning about chickens, watch videos and planning our order, things changed. We already seem to have caught this "chicken math" Our order ended up being for 15 chicks and we are building our coop and run to work for twice that. I already plan to hatch next spring. Even then, I wonder if we are doing enough lol! Good luck with your coop!
Great post!
