If you have chicks for sale please let me know. We're nearby (Columbus for now) and may be looking depending on what the chicks at the local RK look like.
Thanks!
Hi everyone, I'm still lurking around on here, slowly taking everything in. We are slowly working our way towards getting our small flock going. Dad and I are working together to design our coop and run. I wanted to check on a couple of things with our city ordinance, so this morning when I got to work I printed that off. In that ordinance it states "Provide a chicken coop and chicken run that afford a combined ten square feet per chicken." We plan on getting six hens (the max we are allowed to have). So does this mean that we would need 60 square feet for our coop/run? Sorry if this is a silly question; still new to some of this. There is also another section in the ordinance on the location of the coop/run. "Chickens, coops, and runs shall be confined to the rear of the residential structure."
Here is a screen shot of our property. We have about 1.3 acres.
Everything inside the red lines are ours. The red "dot" is roughly where I would like to build our coop (dot is not to scale).
Technically, it's not "to the rear" of the house, as this is part of our side yard. But it is clearly also not in the front yard either. I just thought I'd get some of your opinions if you think this location would be in violation of the ordinance or not. I may yet try to find someone (probably at city hall) to ask, but I can't see that this location would be an issue.
Go ahead and ask experts on the ordinance. Yes, you're looking for 60 ft^2 minimum. It's less than you probably think it is. About 6x10ft, 12x5, that sort of thing. For chickens, it's generally recommended that they have 4sq ft in a coop and 10 sq ft in a run per chicken. this is much better than any bird in a commercial setting will get, and I view it as a minimum for healthy, happy standard chickens. Bantams may want less (but they're often demanding little snots), Pheasants (while only weighing as much as some bantams) demand about 64sq ft per bird from what I've seen (everybody has a different opinion). Geese and turkeys, for instance, will want a lot more space, too, but it's because they're flat huge even more than they are demanding in temperament (though they can be really mean and dangerous when crammed in like sardines).
So after fighting with my slow internet for an hour..ugh! This weeks eggs, 11 dozen, just layer hens. Love the colors I am getting now! EE/OE have great colors. Lots of orders from friends and family. This was the second round I washed up and put in fridge! Those jumbo dark brown eggs are from "Golden Comets". Wish they were heritage, ugh! Huge eggs. Those poor hens do not have longevity, but I have some from flocks folks could no longer keep chickens due to rezoning or other life issues.
Busy busy for sure!
Cleaned up some of the tree mess Sunday.
Pulled 2 of the turkey eggs after candling Tuesday, leaves me with 5 turkey and 7 duck eggs due in a week or so.
My broody silkies (2), had 20 eggs under them, sharing a box. The chicks began hatching which was staggered from while on vaca but after the 4th hatched (1 black silkie, 1 blue silkie and 2 from the frizzled) i took the remaining eggs, candled, only 6 were developed of those. Strange. 1 already internally pipped.
Shocked to get a call from the post office this morning and received 26 chicks from Whitmore farms. 13 blue & splash Ameraucana and 13 Black Copper Marans. Not too many with good feathered shanks which really is disappointing! My boys have great shanks so depending on egg color they may stay.
Then ive been noticing one of my turkey hens coming from the woods alone a few days now. Once i saw she wasn't with the others earlier I went on the hunt.
Well i found remains of eaten eggs, and not too far there she was all nestled in under a briar bush.
She's been sleeping with the others so i know she hasn't gone broody which I'm sure could be due to her eggs disappearing.
No duck eggs or pea eggs that I'm aware of yet.
Marans have picked up laying here but of course i have no pens built still! ! One of the trees that fell of course is where i am building so i guess its good i hadn't!!
Germany was great. It was my first time. We spent most of the week in Munich with a day trip to the Alps and one to Dachau. My Germany vaca in 9 pictures:
(Glockenspiel, lederhosen, steins, Dachau concentration camp gate, Marienplatz square, German guy in Hofbrauhaus, Raphaels Madonna and child, the Alps, Schloss Nymphenburg Palace)
Of course there were instances of poultry, where I took pictures especially for he BYC'ers: (guinea pillow, rooster sculpture, rooster painted sign)

Hey all! It's been a while since I've been on. My phone won't load the BYC app for some reason, I think I need an upgrade. Anywho, I was wondering if anyone knows how long after purchase RK will replace dead chicks? My MIL brought me some Cornish crosses the day before yesterday and I lost one this morning
and another is having trouble getting around.
Hope everyone is well! I'll have to catch up some when I get my phone issue worked out.

better ask the city. Even if you go years without a word being said ( if in wrong location ) all it would take is for a neighbor to complain and they could tell ya to move everything or even get rid of. and ya don't want that.
