INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Looks like frost bite to me. Looks like its on 2 toes. I have a hen like that same toe. It fell off but she still gets around pretty good. Im pretty sure its not your fault. So dont beat your self up over it. Things like this happens.
its on like 4-5 toes her other foot has it but not as bad and howd you fix it like so its not infected and will her swelling go down??

There is no cure for it at this stage. Its black because the tissue is dead. The toes will mostly likely fall off. The only thing you can do is put cream on them to help keep unwanted bacteria from getting into the splits. It will take awhile for the swelling to go down. How does she walk? Is she walking ok still?

Those are the same reasons we moved to Indiana. Not as many people trying to tell you how to live.
That's a good point. There are pros of cons of every state, I'm sure. I always wanted to live near an ocean. I'd actually be happy if I had a pond so I could have a couple of ducks or geese.

animallover~ Is the chicken with frostbite Ms. May? How are the chickens that were attacked doing? Hopefully since you have a first aid kit, you'll have what you need to take care of them.

i think my chicken with her frostbit toe will end up losing it :(

and i found it like this too i feel so bad for her

dont really know how she could of gotten it but she did and i feel like its my fault but shes inside so i know shes warm

No worries, not your fault! this happened before you got her. Just take care of her, and she will know you want to help.
Crafty - where did you get the eggs from? I've been having horrible luck with shipped eggs, but I've been seeing many others also experiencing the same. Many eggs developing making it to lock down, but never pip or hatch. They are thinking its something the PO is doing to the packages? I'm not sure but find it odd I can hatch 19 or 21 eggs picked up locally, but am lucky of I get one to hatch with shipped eggs.

Me too. My Coronation Sussex wound up with one chick. 12 eggs. ugh! I am sitting on 13 BCM from trey... hoping for better luck.

Haha I've lived in a lot of major cities and almost every state for at least a month. I don't like traffic, Codes, covenants or regulations. Indiana is just right

Nothing.g wrong with Indiana! I live in an itty bitty town south of Bloomington. Everyone here has chickens so mine are safe for sure! Trying to talk husband into a goat too...the current reason I'm trying is for 4-H boy to show at 4-h! Not flying so far though!
Been thinking of a goat or two also, have to convince the DW lol.

Low cost of living..................no traffic to speak of..................nobody telling me how to live.............I can have chickens in Indianpolis...........no covenents.............1.5 miles away from the most famous racetrack on the planet...........no traffic.........Yup we love Indianapolis, not too big, easy to get around, I don't have to drive 30 minutes to get groceries ( we walk right around the block to go to a local large store)........I could go on and on.

Does anyone know where I set my preferences so I don't only see 10 posts on this way active thread? I'd like to set it up to 25, or maybe 50? Anything would be better so I don't have to worry about rolling over the annoying active adds whenever my mouse pointer touches one. Yes almost all my viewing is done on an archaic desk PC.

Constantly clicking on the next page,
Yours truly,
Steve

Thanks. Rant off ha ha.

Oh yeah. We are getting a trencher today, to bury the fencing 2 feet down. We have considered our fencing options, and are mainly worried about large predators like racoons, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, so we are using welded 2x4'' wire. Way cheaper than 1/2'' welded, almost half the price. If anyone thinks we are making a huge mistake, please let us know. No snakes that we know of around here to eat chickens, and if anything does get thru the 2x4'', they still have to get into the fortress, I mean the coop. That coop will withstand an (almost) direct hit from an F1 tornado! We figured for the added expense of 1/2'' wiring isn't needed since the coop is so secure. This fencing is to make the run.

Thoughts?
