Steve~ I watched an oppossom wiggle through my 2x4 welded wire fence into the run.... it was a fat one too. I don't know about coons, we are too far from the woods for them to get this far. Coyotes it will definitely keep out, unless they figure out how to jump over your fence.

So. Fat oppossum going thru the 2x4 fence. Was it daytime? I've seen some oppossums around here, big and fat too! Had to evacuate them from my trash cans on occasion the last 10 years as well. Then I would put some 1/2'' square hardeware cloth around the perimeter of the run, 3 feet tall, but not buried.

Do I really need to go 2 feet deep to bury the fencing? Considering how secure I believe our coop is? I'm thinking 12-14 inches deep is enough, and I'm fairly certain nothing will get into the coop, nighttime or otherwise.

Wow, beautiful and healthy looking birds. Mine are just 7 weeks old. I am very impatient and and can't wait for mine to be full grown and beautiful.

I've looked at tons of video and pics. Lots of people lay the screen( fence) on the ground going out about a foot and then cover it with dirt and grass. Does that make sence?

Who feeds fermented food? Who doesn't?

Can you feed fermented food to egg layers or is it just for meat birds?

I have been thinking a lot about using fermented feed, but the other people in my chicken co-op aren't too sure about it. Can chickens be just as healthy eating non-medicated dry feed?

One last question...When do you stop feeding starter feed and what do you feed next? I have hear some people talk about grower feed and layer feed. I just don't know which comes next and when to switch them over.

.When do you stop feeding starter feed and what do you feed next?---------------6 weeks when they are feathered out. I switch to cracked corn with little starter thats left. Then after starter is all gone i switch it to cracked corn and layer.

A lot of people bury fencing straight down 1ft as well. You can then also add chicken wire from the 1ft down and up 3 ft over top your welded wire to keep pr editors out.

Whooo... 200 posts... That's the last time I do not check the thread over a weekend.

Finally feeling better and I am out and about.. Yay.

Played in the Indiana State Pool championships this weekend... Had a great first day and all the girls were shooting lights out.. Had to go back the next day... We eneded up loosing but placing 17th. Fun times.

Met up with Brad to swap some birds and eggs... Great meeting with you Brad, sorry we could not have made a McDonalds run for a chat. That would have been great. The chicks are beautiful. Sadly one of the lavenders died over the weekend. My own fault. I put them in there with the 'emergency' chicks I got from my friend. I think the little guy got trampled. Even though they were a week old, they were a whole lot more boisterous than the lavenders. They are now separated and doing great. Feel so bad for not foreseeing that happening. If I was home this weekend I may have caught the issue before it happened.

So I guess on that note, I have 6 pullets (leghorns,they are feathering in white maybe)...that will be needed a new home. I got them from a friend after she had 'finished' with them for a photo shoot. Not a breed I am interested in keeping, not to mention the lack of space for 6 more LF pullets. They are free. Anyone interested in them feel free to shoot me a PM.

Yes that makes sense. Thank you! Sure glad I don't really need to go 2 feet straight down. We're confident this should suffice.

Thanks guys. I think we're going to do a hybrid, I am digging today and already am getting a blister. The rental place didn't open until 10am, they said they were open at 7. Their loss, and my aerobic workout. I am digging down in some places, and am going to lay it out horizontally in most others. I'll take some pictures and post them up the next few days. If anyone else wants to offer thier opinion/advice, please do so. Or you can come over to help today ha ha.

So sorry to hear about the lav. I will gladly replace it! If you're ever up north or if I go to Indy anytime soon, I will let you know.
