INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hi everyone!

I've been AWOL a few days! Crazy busy. Had a BYC project to work on, more details coming..Lots of outdoor projects and repairs needing done.
@racinchickins and @Leahs Mom awesome on the bees! We are talking about it again, my neighbor north is also, so a lot of discussion with him Friday.. I still see a lot of wild honeybees and we do not mow over those precious dandelions, and other spring wild flowers. We also never use chemicals on the lawn or in our garden.
Newest group of piglets have new homes, went fast. Next sow due in 3 weeks. Remaining piglet is staying with his mom until I can make down to see my good friend @SallyinIndiana and deliver her new piglet.
Lots of hatching! I have my future chicken flock members hatched, so now will be working on folk's orders.
I have an egg eater in the Muscovy flock, arrrgh~

. Haven't figured out the culprit, but think its a yearling hen. Going to change to a different style nesting boxes and see if it helps. Since they are confined, the personalities have changed a lot, but at least they aren't being eaten by predators. I expect the confinement has impacted egg laying also.
First round of Turkey eggs lock down this week, and have first test Peafowl and turkey eggs in lockdown.
My Nubian Goat doe, Cocoa is due..any time! Milks dropped. Sugar, my Oberhasli is expecting also but it will be late May.
Fanny our Cow, Daisy our Donkey are doing great. No calf yet. Discussing with my vet about an ultrasound.

Other news, have my office trailer arranged with incubators, brooders and its working out so well! I loved peering in the brooders, but the dust was just too much in the porch. Now that weather's broke we are doing cosmetics on the outside. it needs exterior repair, and a coat of paint badly! Once the seasons over the inside will get a makeover. Feels much more organized to have everything happening in one space.
We dropped about a dozen of the hawthorn trees, and a few others Saturday. Not even thinking about tree pollen, made ourselves sick, ugh. After spending half the day inside with air conditioning Sunday the effects finally wore off some with the help of antihistamines. I never get sick, DH either, we finally realized why after watching the news!

I'm looking forward to the piglet. I may have to see if I can drive up and get him from you. I had a box but I forgot to bring it home.

Some updated pics of the littles. They're all 8 weeks yesterday.

Most likely to come investigate you? The three Sussex.

Most likely to spaz out and fly across the run? The three Sussex.

She's got the most white on her chest. It's funny, the three of them have very different amounts of white coming in through the breasts.

What a busy weekend we had! It started on Thursday when we got in our new bees, and set them up in their hives. Then the rest of the weekend was devoted to processing the pigs. Prepping the area on Friday, and processing Saturday and Sunday. It was a ton of work, but very satisfying to know that the food we will be eating and sharing with our friends and family was raised and processed humanely and will be very appreciated by those that eat it. One of the hard parts was keeping the chickens from helping, lol. They were all about cleaning up anything that was dropped.

The smaller pig was 280 lbs and the larger was 360, We have almost 400lbs of pork! We are curing 3 country hams, and are having our bacon made by the guy who won the state fair competition for bacon last year. He wants to come down next time we do the processing and learn how it is done. In turn, we will have him teach us how to make bacon. We also made Breakfast and Italian sausage and Bratwurst. We fried up one of each to test and they are sooooo good! Also lots of other cuts. We won't run out of food any time soon.

I've also lost two turkeys to predators. Both went broody outside the barn and I didn't realize they were out there. So now doing a head count every evening and searching for anyone coming up missing. Btw - they really, really don't like being picked up off the nice comfy nest they've set up for themselves.

Now we just have to finish planting fruit trees and other landscaping plants we ordered over the winter, muck out the deep litter in the chicken pens, spring clean the barn, take the pig pen apart and get the garden ready to plant. Then we can get started on real projects! lol. I hope everyone else is having a nice and relaxing spring like we are.

That being said, I wouldn't want to be doing anything else. Too bad I have a 'real' job that interferes with (but also pays for) my farm work.

A lot accomplished @racinchickins !

I spent most the working part of my weekend trying to clean out the barn. Lots of stuff in there that just needs to be gone through and sent to the dump or goodwill or set aside for keepsakes.

I love it when it gets all clean and organized...which is about 1/4 done...but it sure is dusty work. Feels like the proverbial elephant that you have to eat "one bite at a time".

Do you folks have any tbh or are they all langstroth?

Two of my 9 hens have gone broody. I'm not happy about that, but we've got them on hatching eggs, so hopefully soon, they'll be back at their jobs!

This weekend, one of the broody hens accidentally got separated from her clutch--FOR FOUR HOURS!!! Her clutch was eleven days old. The eggs were not warm at all by the time she got back on them. Does anybody have an experience like this that has a happy ending?

We actually don't use either. Wade builds and uses Warre hives. He's a hands off, let the girls do their thing, kind of beekeeper. I'm a very very hands off, let Wade do his thing type of beekeeper.
