Hello,
We are fairly new started last spring with a dozen chickswe now have 29 and 1 is currently broody and sitting on 3 eggs![]()
we have 4 ducks, 2 pygmy goats and 2 shetland sheep also. We have a small homestead in rural Greencastle.
Hello All. I am in Marion, Indiana. Grant County. I am in the research stage of getting chickens. I would like to start with 6-8 layers. What size coop & run should I get? I don't want something that I have to get on my hands and knees to clean. Any builders out there? Any tips I should know to get started?
Thanks in advance
Welcome! Not too far from you. Honestly I'd go with the largest sizes possible. When I made my coop and run, I figured 4sq ft per bird for the coop and 10 sq ft per bird for the run. I've not had any trouble with the coop size, but I am increasing my run size his year. While I free range my birds 6 days a week (live next to church and don't want the chickens to bother them) there are a few dirt/mud spots and grass is very very short.
Any idea what chicken breeds your interested in at this point?
So far i want Australoupe, Rhode Island Red a Deleware.
When it comes to wood, I'm by no means handy with a hammer. I just priced a local coop and the guy wants 1000$, then there's converting a shed or going with a a prefab.
This looks cheap as heck but I'm hoping it can be strengthened. Any idea?

It says free shipping. It looks really nice. Very good starter coop! I like portable coops, Hoping to get several set up before I start meat birds this year.
I noticed the shipping, get a solid quote from them, Freight is usually pricy.
Craigslist is a really good place to look too, I bought a large shed we moved in one piece on our trailer.
Have you looked on Craigslist? Obviously anything used you would want to clean and sterilize. I turned my 16x10 shed into a coop. I fenced off the back 10ft section to make a 10x10 coop and gave me a 6x10 section for storage. The eBay link looks nice. What about using wooden dog houses for a coop? I know an 8x8 shed kit from Lowes costs about $600, but of course you would have to it it together. Another option that I am considering this year is a hoop coop. If you do a search on here it will bring up quite a few pictures and how to's. doesn't look too hard.
