INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Phew, quiet here today! Not that I'm one to talk! I haven't really been busy, personally, just enjoying my summer break from classes. :D Thought I'd share pictures of my babies today at 12 days old, though. :love Also, a few of the Silkie babies, who are just over 11 weeks old now.

Two of the Silver Gray Dorkings, Donnie and Callette. I'm about 99% sure now that Donnie (blue band) is the boy.

Miss Cazzie the blue Cochin. She hops into my lap almost immediately when I sit with them. :love Unfortunately for her, her little nails are razor sharp!

700

Izzy the Blue Ameraucana and her precious cheeks! :love She has a lot of attitude already.

700

Dorking pile! They like to pull up the paper towels and 'carpet bathe' when I have them out of the brooder.

700

The paper towels got pulled up? Lydda pleads the fifth...

700

Thirsty babies :love

700

My poor Brahma, Umru, has almost no feathers yet. Poor darling's going to go through a heck of an awkward phase...

700

Rooska the precious Lavender Orp :love

700

Here are the two Silkie boys, Benjamin and Winter. Big Ben is such a cocky little squirt! He's lucky his father is so patient with him sometimes! Meanwhile, Winty's pretty much afraid of his own shadow. Talk about polar opposites!

700

Indigo, my little beauty :love

700

Marka and her huge foot feathers!

700

And here they are, the teenagers, just hanging out like teenagers do.

Super cute! :love Our chicks are a week younger than your silkies. I can't believe he w fast they grow/change!

I haven't posted in a bit. Been pretty sick. I was told strep/pharyngitis, even though they did not swab for it. Still...turned out to be fever for a week straight, extremely painful swallowing etc, then turned into a chest thing that lasts almost another week. My poor baby is now going through the chest/cough phase of it. I'm crossing my fingers the other two don't get it. Not how we wanted to start summer break.

We also had another follow-up Wednesday for my son's surgery and found out we will be planning another surgery at our next visit. That's a bummer too. Bleh. I'm usually a ray of sunshine, but I'm not feelin it today lol. Hopefully we will have a nice time at the cookout later. We can finally be with family now that none of us are contagious.

Sounds like some of your have a fun weekend happening. I hope all of you have a great one!

Hello! It's great to find an Indiana thread! I am a new BYC owner from Indianapolis. I live in the north east part of town, just around the corner from castleton.
I started with 4 chicks about 6-7 weeks ago, but yesterday morning I found all my chickens had been killed. My coop wasn't as predator proof as I thought it was. It broke my heart.
I'll be spending all day tomorrow reinforcing it. The new group of chicks arrive Friday.

@hbrown322

So sorry to hear that! Good to have you on the thread. Better post some photos when you get the new kiddos :)

I hope everyone and their flocks have a great holiday weekend! I have some family coming come today and tomorrow. My DF and I place flags on graves every year at a cemetery that has been almost forgotten except for a small group of people doing the upkeep on it. My DF's parents took care of it, and now he does the bookkeeping and several other things. I have been going with him to meetings and to do flags every year for a long time now. I will most likely take it over when he can no longer do the work. Walking around, placing the flags over graves that are so old you can't read them is so bittersweet. I enjoy doing it, and feel proud to do my part in remembering fallen soldiers, but it is sad seeing how many of them were 18-20 and their lives just started. Many were already married before going off to war. I can only imagine what life was like during past wars, and even though losing anyone in the military today still is tragic, I just think, "Wow, this man died helping to form our country and he died so many years ago, that he may not have any family living, but here I am, 34 years old, and saying, 'John Smith, thank you for what you sacrificed and what you helped accomplish during the Civil War.' "

Woo - okay, enough with the heavy.

What I really wanted to post was that I switched feed this week. Since I have been getting eggs from a farmer in town, I have been picking his brain. Got some pointers and decided to try our local feed co-op. I got 3 bags of non-medicated grower feed for $13/50 lb bag. I think RK has had their chick starter at 11.99/50 lb bag. The feed co-op's 50 lbs feel like 60 lbs! Definitely can tell the difference already. It has lasted longer and the feed itself looks better. I think eventually, the price difference will work itself out, and I won't be using grower forever. I think the layer feed is a couple dollars cheaper, so I can't wait until I finally start seeing some squatting and laying!! I also figured that with not going to RK as much, I won't be buying things I don't need...

Roxy and her brother Salami having fun in the puppy pool!

Enjoy your Memorial Day everyone!

I thought y'all would enjoy this. :D Today was my little Call Duck Crashie's 'hatchday', so we had a poultry party! As I do every year for the annual hatchday party, I made her 'hatchday cakes' out of a watermelon, diced veggies, and plain yogurt. As you can see, she was less than impressed.

700

After some encouragement, she did give them a try, though.

700

"Blech!" Spoiled rotten...

700

I gave her some cucumber and yogurt, which seemed to have contented her.

700

Look at that happy face! :love

700

Meanwhile, the 'cakes' went to the girls outside. I think they liked it.

700

My little Silkie fuzzies wanted to get in on it, but weren't too keen on fighting their way through the crowd. They did eventually get some watermelon when their dad, Reuben, came over. He was tidbitting for the girls, but the girls just weren't interested, so the fuzzies took advantage of it. :D

700

I also gave my babies in the brooder some cucumber and yogurt. They were terrified at first, but it didn't take them too long to warm up to it once they realized it was food. :D

If anyone wondered, yes, I do have a lot of free time right now. :p

You don't know how much I appreciate that you do that.

more baby goats were born here over the weekend. 1 female and 1 male. They are 50% Nubian and 50% Oberhasli. They are both for sale if anyone is interested. We don't plan to keep any of the kids this year so my first two male kids born on the 14th are also for sale.
Here are pictures of the May 14th males.

Welcome to BYC and our thread. Its a painful lesson, has happened to me too. Don't hesitate to ask questions we are here to help.
