INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I got several surprises today.
1. DH got sick from dinner last night, so we'll have to change my birthday plans.

2. I thought my Bielefelder was just a poor layer. I didn't realize she was a hoarder! I found her hidden nest of eggs. I'm very surprised the dogs didn't find them 1st!

With all of these, it brings today's egg count up to 10!

3. I didn't see the CCL chick with her mom & sis, so I went out searching the entire yard, talking to the bushes & even asked some of the neighbors who were outside.. I ended up finding her in the coop - about 8 ft away from her mom. Yes, she's 8 wks old, but they've never been that far apart before.

4. While searching for the missing CCL, I heard some peeping in the nestbox. Two of the eggs hatched a day early!

This is just about the smallest chick I've ever seen. She's a Spitzington (Appenzeller Spitzhauben x Black Orpington)

PS- There are pips on the orp eggs in the incubator.

Hey all, posting for a cousin of mine. Her county (Allen or Adams, don't remember which) is re doing their livestock zoning. Basically she wants to hurry and get some meat birds, and at least one turkey so that she can get them grandfathered. That way she'll be able to have them again in the future. The way they're going to do it is: if you have 20 chickens now, you can never exceed that number after the effective date. If you don't have goats or turkeys, or anything else, you can never have any after the effective date. She has 19 chickens now, two of which are roosters, but I will be taking one. Does anyone have any hatchlings or yoingins for sale in the Ft. Wayne/ Decatur/ Huntersrown/ Berne area? If so please let me know ASAP so we can coordinate with her. TIA

Rural King on 24 has had chicks. Some Cornish also.

All you goat folk....

My 2 goat boys have been on browse and hay all summer. Now, coming into fall, there is not as much browse available for them and I can see that it appears that they may be losing some weight.

In their prior life they were feed browse and hay only.

I'm going to start putting out more hay so that it's always available free-feed. Is there anything else you'd recommend to help put some weight on before winter? These guys haven't been fed anything but browse and hay their entire lives.

Perhaps I should have a fecal done.
Couldn't hurt to do a fecal, I usually deworm in fall. I just do it, so many comingled species here.

I don't know boo about SOP. I'm not a breeder. Have no interest in breeding.

All that said, I couldn't be happier with how this Delaware turned out. I could be way off but that's a good looking chicken in my world.

She certainly is lovely!

Sad day in our household. "Violet" crowed.
We had three Araucana chicks hatch. Two are crowing and one is laying.
City rules say we can only keep one roo and Violet is the last to crow so he's getting chased all over the pen.
Need to rehome not for freezer camp. Pure Araucana, muffless. Sweet.
Please reply ASAP if you've been wanting the breed.
What a shame! Gorgeous rooster!

When's the effective date? Porter's isn't doing any more orders for poults this year, but he should have more available in the spring. Otherwise, it's time to glean around craigslist and feed stores. The Bloomington RK (only RK in the state that I know of to sell heritage turkeys) still had Royal Palms and Bourbon poults when I was there a week ago, but it's pretty darn far from you.

DD was playing with the chickens again & made Darth Layer a floral necklace. She ate her pretty necklace a few min after the pic was taken.

Kids & chickens make good playmates.

Adorable! That's one of the funniest names I've ever seen on a hen.

I'm sure you'll find a home for this gorgeous boy. As rare as his breed is, you might be able to find someone who's shooting to build a better Araucana. Worst case, I could probably take him. I'm working on EEs, so I don't have any of his breed here, but I've got 14 or so ladies and only one grown roo at the moment. I'm still working on downsizing, but I can guarantee I'm not going to eat him. Had too many birds and had to whittle everyone down based on the all-powerful Egg Basket Index.

So far, I'm down to several EEs of numerous colors, one BCM, one Welsummer, one mottled Breda, one Orpington, nine turkeys (seven hens/jennies), three Polish chicks, three Cayuga ducklings and one Runner duckling (because one of my very few customers insisted I sell him duck eggs), a golden pheasant, and Coturnix quail. Between these birds, I get cream with tan spots, cream, chocolate brown to brick red, medium brown with chocolate spots, two-toned brown, dark blue-green with almost black spots; mauve with various colors of spots, blue, really light blue, light green, aqua; green with purple, gray, dark brown, light brown, blue or white spots (she's even laid eggs with more than one color of spot per egg). I should be getting black and white eggs between the Polish and the Cayuga by the time spring rolls around.

What are you aiming for with your flock?

Quote: I love a colorful egg basket too. And egg variety! We do use duck eggs, so resumed raising Pekin. Very dependable layers. My chickens give us everything from white, green, blue, pink and chocolate colors of eggs. Here is one of my favorite photos of a weeks collection:

Some of the blues look white, this was with my older phone. I could sell a lot more than I do, but we really eat a lot of eggs here! My breakfast is normally 4 fresh eggs for example. I have one EE that lays a slate grey egg, never seen a color quite like it. I use our older eggs for our hogs to up the protein intake for them. Also for treats, especially when moving to another pasture.
