INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Fingers crossed!
Still alive and healthy! But it's lonely! We made a special trip to RK only to find out that they wouldn't budge about the 6 chick minimum.... so I didn't get him any company

I think it depends on the salesperson, but they probably won't sell just one. Last time I went to RC another customer asked if they could give me 3 free chicks. (Basically, they only wanted 3, so they were willing to give us 3 after we left the store. It was hard to decline, but I'm sure she found some one.)

That's good to know. We are going to raise a poult or two next year for thanksgiving. I would offer to go in on some now but we just aren't ready to raise anything during the winter. Best of luck on the little one!

For @JanetMarie & @Leahs Mom
Choc Torte recipe:
I started with a triple choc cake mix (had pudding & mini bits of choc in it) & made according to package directions.

I slightly froz both 9" cooled cakes & sliced them to get 4 thinner cakes.

I made a choc cream cheese mousse/frosting to spread between the layers.
(beat 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened with 1/2 cup cup powdered sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Then add 1 cup melted choc chips (just microwaved them for 1 min)

(normally I'd stop here for a delicious dessert, but I wanted to go extra rich & indulgent.)

Frosted cake with a container of choc frosting & put it in the fridge.

Made choc lace by melting a cube of white almond bark. (what I had on hand). Put it into a plastic bag, cut off a corner & drew designs onto wax paper. 1st time I did this, so there were plenty of practice designs which the kids were happy to eat. Best ones were used on the torte.

Poured ganache over the top (Just heated 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream in microwave until almost boiling. Add 1/2 cup choc chips & stir until smooth/ shiny) I waited about 5 min before pouring, so it wouldn't be too hot. I didn't need all of it, so I held back a tiny bit & whipped it up to make a fluffy frosting.

After it cooled just a little more, I put the white choc decorations on the ganache. Then I used a decorator cone with tip & the leftover fluffed up ganache to add edging.

Because of all the dairy, it must be refrigerated. Definitely not an everyday dessert, but it was our big Thanksgiving crowd & a special occasion. Servings must be cut thin b/c it's very rich. It didn't last long, so I didn't have to worry about storing left-over torte. I'd make it again for parties.

I see pumpkins are on the okay list for chicken treats. We have a couple basketball sized pumpkins that didn't get carved this year. With only six ladies in our flock, do I need to be at all concerned about them overloading on seeds. I read an article on crop problems a while back so now I'm paranoid. Any insights would be appreciated.

Hello everyone. Happy belated Thanksgiving to everyone. Hope everyone had a lovely time with family and friends. Love all the photos that were posted over the holiday, congrats on the new arrivals :) .
Crafty chick, I live just out of Michigan City city limits. Surrounding areas would be considered LaPorte county or even Porter county. It definitely made me boil when this guy came back and said that he was lost even though he lives just down the road. For being lost, why would you come back to the same place a week later?? Err. Called the police to file a report though.

Hope everyone is having a nice Thanksgiving weekend!

Help Please! I need advice "asap." My daughter Meredith is home for the holiday and brought her two year old pug named Moose. Apparently one of our cats scratched his eye today. He has been keeping it shut off and on, but hasn't acted distressed. He acts normal other than shutting his eye off and on. However, Meredith is distressed because she read online that the dog should immediately be taken to a veterinarian. Of course, it's the weekend and the emergency vet clinic is very expensive. She recently had to bring her cat to one in Indy where it was put to sleep an hour after treatment— $1,000. If her dog needs to be treated, she will take it to the emergency vet clinic here inn Evansville, but I'm wondering if any of our members could please offer advice. I know that many of you have multiple species of animals that you treat yourselves whenever possible. My chicken health book has info on a boric acid and distilled water treatment for an eye infection, but I don't know if that is suitable for dogs. Here are a couple of pictures that show the scratch and that the eye is bloodshot. THANK YOU!

Meanwhile...I am THANKFUL for my two little black bantam Cochin frizzle chicks from @ellymayRans and my four chickens from @kittydoc that brought my flock to nine members (except the frizzles are still in quarantine). Here are a few photos:

(The pictures I took today of my Chocolate English Orp and Beilefelder hens —also from kittydoc didn't turn out).

I meant to post these pics of the frizzles two weeks ago!

@Mother2Hens eye appears to have an ulcer which may be scarring, should be seen by DVM asap. Should not be horribly expensive. Office call/exam, which will be high, plus fluorescent stain of eye, plus ointment or drops. I'd guess $200-ish. Don't wait til Monday. Eyes are too important.
