INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Does anyone here have advice/tip on hatching quail? DD's project is in the home stretch (day 15). Saw some embryo development & so far have been treating them like chicken eggs. One thing we read was that quail chicks are more active, so we decided to hatch upright to avoid games of egg bowling. Turned the humidity up & we're waiting. No pips, peeping, or rocking eggs. Will we see those things in quail eggs? Are they like chickens & the zipping occurs about 12-24 hrs after pipping or is it different?

I awoke this morning excited about processing day, went out early to load up and saddened by the site of my chocolate Pied gal that had been brooding against the house behind a large holly bush dead in my front yard. She was beautiful and sweet and getting ready within a week to be a first time mommy.

Head neck and crop gone, I immediately went to the nest and gathered her 6 very cold eggs, candles 1 no movement but got my incubator plugged in and threw them in. Wasn't hopeful as her body was frosted and obvious she'd been dead for a bit. It was so cold.

I had to be at a fellow BYC members place for processing and had to leave. Big thank you and shout out to Racinchickens for another great day preparing our thanksgiving birds!
My brother and I went and did 2 turkeys and ducks from my place. I so enjoy my wonderful friends I've made through here over the years!

My day did brighten

as this evening I went ahead and candled those eggs and surprised by seeing 5 of the 6 ducklings moving about in the eggs!!!

What an amazing thing! I would have never bet on them surviving. Granted they still need to make it past hatch but I'm thrilled!!

RIP my pretty little girl.

Hello and good day everyone. Hope all is well :)
I want to thank everyone for their kind words and prayers thru the tough times that was ahead. Well after I posted my last post, Hubby and I sat down to have a long talk about everything.
Im happy to say, we have decided that we do not want to go on with the divorce :D . I do though, have to down size a little on the ranch but I can still keep, yay.
Also, on top of that news. I would seriously like to give a huge heads up to northwest Indiana owners. On Election Day, I had 3 of my ducks come up stolen. There were no tail signs to assume wild life was in pinned up area (tall fencing/ dog run), no feathers nor a single drop of blood in sight, nor in the woods, nor at either neighbors property. Which made me assume they were stolen. With that said, I took video of a vehicle that was casing our property. After that day, it was silent vibes for me until Saturday afternoon/early evening. The same exact vehicle comes back to post up in my neighbors driveway, which were he parked my ducks were right there a few feet away. This flock mother dashed out the door as if I was on fire with video fully rolling and confronted this vehicle. The older man completely admits that he has came to this residents twice, that he is lost but yet lives just down the road from me. Grrr. I'm unable to send the video for it's too large of file but even the county deputy said it sounded to fishy for him to be lost. He had two hunting dogs with him, plus was wearing camo gear. On top of it, my dad is best friends with a neighbor who lives two doors down from him, best friend's wife said he has been taking his dogs in the woods for training on top they had one duck come up missing samething, no feather blood just gone. Be on the looookout for this man around your birds. I'm sure he does not want for pets :( . Grrrr. I understand hunting is hunting a way if life but stealing someone else's birds out of their own yard, not cool in my book.

Mine always hatch on the 17th day, like clockwork! I have literally hatched hundreds and 99% of them spot on the 17th day. Usually have stragglers a day later. They hatch fast, pip and zip fast too. Just a word of caution, set the incubator on the floor when you open up to remove the chicks, lol. They are quick little things, look like little bees running around!

Glad to hear things are on the mend for you!
After you confronted this person I bet he won't be back. Fingers crossed.

Glad to hear it & thankful that we decided to hatch the quail in a separate incubator. Their incubator is already on the floor, so we're good to go for tomorrow. (We started them late afternoon.... so perhaps tomorrow night.) Looking out for pips, but nothing yet. With chickens we usually get pips on day 20 & the hatching is on day 21. However, we're using the Hovabator for the quail, which is not as exact as my homemade incubator. At least I added a computer fan so it's better than it used to be.

I'll post pics when we have some news.

Had our family's Thanksgiving meal Sunday afternoon. Youngest DD hosted at her new home. I cooked the turkey and gravy at home for her, and took it over. (10 minutes from us, very pleased about that!) Told the kids the home is beautiful! Oh my, 4 bathrooms! Nice large brick home in an older neighborhood, in town. We always spend Thanksgiving day at DHs parents, and its been their tradition for years. My brother will come out and stay with my parents so I can go.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
