INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I'm still flabbergasted that all those new birds from @jchny2000 's place are settling in so well here. Hardly any noise even though there are now six roosters here and 25 hens. Added two more ducks, including a bossy little snowy mallard hen and a young Pekin drake, and they're settling in spectacularly with my Cayuga and blue Runner hens. Everyone seems to be really enjoying themselves and all this nice weather we've been having. Lots of dust bathing and scratching around in the straw I've covered all my yard with since they've been here. They're loving the fermented feed, too! No big fights and very little arguing. I'm just amazed. Everyone's been really orderly about roosting at night--they all just march right in and roost. All the roosts are 4 ft up and made from 2x4s. While I have 30+ feet of roosts available, they don't spread out much so there's still plenty of room up there for everyone.

One hen had very bad heat stress in transport, but she's completely fine now and back to her old self.

The little quail is adorable and has really taken to his new home, too! Quite chummy with the two golden pheasants in his pen.

Question for those with the Muscovy. So I caught a rooster trying to mate with a younger female scovy duck.
Now I know the risk of Drake mating with chickens but should I be concerned about roo over duck??? Lol! Was so strange to witness!
My GLW roo would even try to mate the goose hens.. bad idea.

Hello from Noblesville just starting out. I got a coop and I'll probably start with 3-6 chicks soon.

Hello Indiana. Angel's eggs here in Peru In. I am fairly new to this. I have 13 layers and two roo's. All are RIR. Having a blast with them. All my pulletts are laying. All are at six months. I want to sell the eggs to the locals, I sent in the application to the egg board at Perdue and waiting on a reply. Is that all I need to do to be able to sell my eggs?

Welcome to our thread!

@Angels Eggs

Are you planning on putting out a sign or just selling to friends, neighbors and co-workers? If just selling to friends you don't need to do anything.

@Mother2Hens

For ouchy bottoms I use NuStock.... but it IS stinky. It heals irritated areas very quickly. It is also a great anti-fungal so if there is gleet, it can really sooth and heal the external around the vent. (But, of course, doesn't take care of the internal issue causing the gleet.)

So, anyhow, I recommend NuStock unless you don't want a strong smelling item!!!!! It's also very "goopy".

I've never seen it in a store, had to order online. I empty it into a pint canning jar when I get it so that I can stir it well whenever I use it and not have any waste in the tube. I slit open the tube and scrape it all out.

I have a dilemma. Agrarian will be getting a few chick breeds in the next few weeks that I have been wanting. So I called and reserved about 8 chicks. Then I got to thinking, that for as much as it will cost to buy them at Agrarian (with their mark up), I could get the same chicks delivered to me straight from Meyer Hatchery. Then I wasted far too much time on Meyer's website, figuring out a theoretical order.

If you don't order the minimum 15 chicks, not only do you have to wait until after March 31, but you pay about $14 extra in shipping. Once your cart goes from 14 chicks to 15, the calculated shipping cost changes from $33 something to $20.

I figure it like this: I could pay about 9+ tax for 8 chicks at Agrarian (more if they consider some of mine "rare") which comes to about $77.00. Or, I could pay about $63 ish for the same chicks delivered. OR, I could pay the whole $77. And get 15 chicks! (Drat that chicken math!)

I really shouldn't just add 15 chicks to my flock. It would be better if I sell off the extra 7. What should I do? I was wondering if anybody on here would want to split a Meyer order with me.

Not to bash meyer... we ordered 15 pullet chicks from them in December and of those 15:

5 are males
1 had a displaced ligament and will have to be put down
3 had curled toes and so far haven't been able to perch.

Not sure if that makes your decision any easier or not...

Aw, I'm sorry you've had a bad experience. I think every hatchery is going to have some good reviews and some bad.
I've been very happy with most of my Meyer chicks. Out of 12, mine have all been proper females. Have not yet gotten my 10% rate of failure. I did have one chick (Sicilian Buttercup) that failed to thrive and didn't live out the first week. It just happens sometimes. And I had one that grew up to be the ugliest Salmon Faverolle you ever saw, so that was a disappointment.

I did check some other hatcheries last night, cuz I thought, if I'm going to place an order, what other options do I have? The ones with the best breeds have minimums of 25. Or some require you to buy a minimum number of each breed. Not just one or two.

So far Meyer is my best bet.

Oh! That sounds like fun!

Up here "shell eggs" are allowed to be sold at the farmer's market without any kind of food permit/licensing. But I think it may be a county-by-county thing rather than state-wide. You should be able to check with the farmer's market or your county's extension office to see if there are any regulations involved if you want to sell at market or from home.
