INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have a dilemma. Agrarian will be getting a few chick breeds in the next few weeks that I have been wanting. So I called and reserved about 8 chicks. Then I got to thinking, that for as much as it will cost to buy them at Agrarian (with their mark up), I could get the same chicks delivered to me straight from Meyer Hatchery. Then I wasted far too much time on Meyer's website, figuring out a theoretical order.

If you don't order the minimum 15 chicks, not only do you have to wait until after March 31, but you pay about $14 extra in shipping. Once your cart goes from 14 chicks to 15, the calculated shipping cost changes from $33 something to $20.

I figure it like this: I could pay about 9+ tax for 8 chicks at Agrarian (more if they consider some of mine "rare") which comes to about $77.00. Or, I could pay about $63 ish for the same chicks delivered. OR, I could pay the whole $77. And get 15 chicks! (Drat that chicken math!)

I really shouldn't just add 15 chicks to my flock. It would be better if I sell off the extra 7. What should I do? I was wondering if anybody on here would want to split a Meyer order with me.

@pipdzipdnreadytogo - I read your post about sexlinks, and can't find it! But I feel you pain. I am so sorry about your girl- How is she? I am in the same place right now. One of my very first birds - a sexlink -Rhonda, I am pretty sure has cancer. We dealt with this 1 1/2 years ago with one of my EE's and the symptoms are the same. I just can't afford the vet bill to confirm right now. It is so hard to decide when to cull. But I am pretty sure we are there now. She has been doing pretty well in the mild mannered bantam pen, but her comb has gotten significantly paler this week. Her tummy more swollen, her breastbone more protruding. She is spending more time off alone not doing anything - before the past couple days she was still interacting with her new friends a lot and acting pretty normal. She is no longer jumping on the windowsill to visit.

DH will have to do it while DD and I are gone. I need to make sure our neighbors get to say goodbye first, they are quite attached to her too. Sigh.

I too said Sexlinks never again after learning more about them. But I did end up with a chick last year. A neighbor over bought after our new code went into affect. I knew Cinnamon would have a good home here- where would she end up if I didn't take her and her two Buff Orp "sisters" Buffy and Nugget? She has been a good measuring stick as Rhonda's illness had progressed. I know her life may not be long, but it will be happy and a bit spoiled here.

Thank you, @flyladyrocks . Sorry to tempt you and keep you up late!

I will probably go with getting them from Agrarian unless Anne calls me back and says they can't get the male speckled sussex I want. Or unless there is someone who does want to split an order. It's easier than dealing with Craigslist, trying to sell the spares. (Btw, I've gotten chicks through the Noblesville P.O. before. They were great. )

I will be checking both TSCs near me for Mille Fleur bantams, in case I see any. But there again, I don't really want six of those.

I will post photos of chicks, whichever way it goes!

Edited cuz the @ symbol didn't take the first time.

@ellymayRans didn't I read that you are hatching Mille Fluers? I'd love a few of those beauties but I think my bantams are at Max capacity! Boys are usually no problem, always extras! Will Agrarian order one for you? Let me know what Anne sayKinda wondered, someone else said they wouldn't. Hmmm, the @ didn't take for me either- I'm on my phone maybe I that's it?

@flyladyrocks is correct. I am hatching out bantam Mille Fleur Cochins.
I set some this weekend to test fertility and my next batch I will set nlt mid week next week, those are already "sold". Staggering hatches because I will be on vacation the last week of March and plan to hatch as many eggs as they give me.

If you're interested just let me know. I work in Indy a couple days a week too so we could meet up if you want. I'm just about 38 miles south of Indy.

Yes, the @ problem is usually on the mobile app.

Well Agrarian called me back, and they can't do males because Meyer can't mark them or separate them. And it would be bad to have some random males mixed in with their pullets, lol!

So now I have to decide if I really want to go ahead with a Meyer order, or just skip getting males. It sure would be nice if there were a local breeder of Speckled Sussex. I had a hard time finding any last year.

Hi, thanks! Do you think a bantam Cochin roo could successfully breed with a large fowl hen? I really don't want bantams, but I'd like to find a way to get the Mille Fleur pattern into my standard size chickens. It might be worth a shot to try.

Aw, I'm sorry you've had a bad experience. I think every hatchery is going to have some good reviews and some bad.
I've been very happy with most of my Meyer chicks. Out of 12, mine have all been proper females. Have not yet gotten my 10% rate of failure. I did have one chick (Sicilian Buttercup) that failed to thrive and didn't live out the first week. It just happens sometimes. And I had one that grew up to be the ugliest Salmon Faverolle you ever saw, so that was a disappointment.

I did check some other hatcheries last night, cuz I thought, if I'm going to place an order, what other options do I have? The ones with the best breeds have minimums of 25. Or some require you to buy a minimum number of each breed. Not just one or two.

So far Meyer is my best bet.
I had good luck so far with Meyer, but I bought geese and Cornish cross meat birds. They were very understanding for my cancellation last year when my Mom had heart surgery.
Quote: I bet they are gorgeous!
