INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

View attachment 1102050 @Mother2Hens yea, yours are definitely frizzle. I'm still holding out hope mine will surprise me though!!! Wishful thinking, although I know it's not going to happen. Hahaha

The first year of owning chickens was a rough one for me. My first flock was taken out by a raccoon. The rooster of my second flock gave himself a concussion and after a week of trying to get him back to good health I had to put him down. Ever since things have been going well, *knock on wood*. Yesterday one of the pullets from my new group laid her first egg! I forgot how exciting it is to find that first egg!! This is the photo I sent to my mom who luckily shares my enthusiasm!

I am so sorry for your chicken troubles! I also have in my first year and I am so thankful that I have not had any major crises as of yet. My baby girls the first ladies just started laying in the past week and I am so stinking excited! I'm glad that you have happy girls and experiencing the good part of having chickens.

So I made myself a goal! My husband refuses to buy me this cute adorable Australian Shepherd puppy for $600. I've always wanted one since I was little girl. So my goal is to sell as many ducklings, quails, hatching eggs, and what ever else I can from my hobby to raise enough money to buy me a Australian Shepherd Puppy! I would love a male because I feel he would bond better to me, but I might have to get a female because I have a female German shepherd. Also I hate how people sell them with the tails cut. I want the tail! I like fluffy tails!
Aren't Australian Shepherds Amazingly Cute?

Also my son has been making me replay this song over and over! It's so cute listening to him trying to sing it. I've been waking up humming/ singing it unintentionally too... Hope you all love it and hope it sticks in your head as it does mine!

One broody has now hatched four babies, and judging by the eggs they hatched from I know one's half BCM, one's half mottled Breda, one's half EE, and one's half OE, but they all look alike. Have four older chicks from the ducks hatching, and half look like Leghorn mixes. Have a broody blue copper Marans, but it looks like she's been evicted from nervous nest by--get this--a broody Leghorn? Surely the world must be ending or something. Only time will tell if she's serious, but I know she's serious enough to try taking a piece out of my hands for stealing some eggs to give back to the blue mommy.

The black EE roo is healing much better on his bumblefoot now that I'm not confining and torturing him. It's taking forever, but he's definitely much better.

The neighborhood has been taken over by a family of what look to be Cooper's hawks. Thought they might be sharp shinned based on one that got caught in the chicken run (thank heavens it was after the sparrows and not my birds), but I saw a juvenile female and *holy cow* she's a lot bigger than that one had been, they're all making the same calkd, but the juveniles sound lower and hoarser because they're calling *all the time*. Parents aren't around anymore, I'm guessing because the two juveniles (one boy, one girl) are calling all the time instead of adjusting and hunting for themselves. Been dramatic here

NEED ADVICE about Predator Deterrents please. My youngest daughter is spending the summer in NC at my niece and her family's "farm" (24 chickens). After a recent coyote attack, my niece wants to get either a Grand Pyranees dog or two donkeys. She and her DH are both MDs, so price isn't an issue and they have a huge barn with horse stalls (no horses). What do you recommend based on your personal experiences with guard dogs and/or donkeys? What breeds of donkeys or dogs? At one time, she was thinking of getting miniature donkeys, but her vet said that Mamouth donkeys are very sweet and make great guards. She knows that both dogs and donkeys are pack animals, so she wouldn't get just one (she already has one dog that unfortunately is a bird dog! lol) Thank you!
Pyrenees need good fences. Mini donkeys could do the job, but you need pairs for sure. Any guardian animal needs help working. With it being coyote, I would want the largest animal they are willing to keep.
