INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

woke up this morning to thirty cranky chickens. the little darlings knocked over their waterer all over the newly cleaned brooder. argh.

Well I guess its time to move into the dog crate. Just have to go get it out of the shed. I am also going to try them with a rabbit bottle for water, and maybe something else for the food. Save some floor space and some feed. They have almost emptied the mason jar onto the floor already.

I like the rabbit bottle idea for the brooder. Let us know if it works for them. Also for the feeder...I was thinking next year I would use one of those hang on the cage medal feeders they use for small animals (fill it from the top and it fills a feed tray). That way as they get bigger I can raise it up and try to save on food. They do make such a mess!

whew ,they are now in the new box. Grrreat dane sized wire crate, with very carefully made file folder shaving cather, haha.

Much more room and when the one tried to fly up it didn't doink off of the ceiling. will have to se how the water bottle does, they haven't tried it yet.

My 12 big guys and girls are outside today! Coop and run got started and is far enough along to keep them in for a few hours! The 4 BPR that really are BPR....we've learned only 1 is a hen...

So I never thought I would care about stupid chickens, I ate chicken, thought they weren't smart, thought they were just dirty birds. Then I got ten this spring....... I just wanted eggs. Don't get me wrong, I am an animal lover. I have had more dogs, horses, cat, parrots, fish, alpacas, that I loved.... bla bla bla, you name it I have had it. I am a dog groomer by trade. I am border line vegetarian. I only eat dairy, eggs, fish, and chicken..... nope not anymore.( My best friend brought a whole cooked chicken to my house tonight and I nearly gagged, mostly because I have 3 week old cochins and wyandottes in the room 15 feet away from my kitchen and it might as well have been a cooked puppy to my brain) I'm losing it huh? lol. So I realized.....I LOVE CHICKENS. Yep I said it. I'm hooked. Darn birds. I hug them. They love me. It's pathetic. I'm not sure when in the 7 weeks that I have had them living in my house, occasionally watching t.v. with my husband and I, that this attachment manifested itself, but I am irreversibly addicted to this feathery, constantly pooping, pecks my fingers, dusty, awesome adorable creature. I can't stop trolling BYC. I hope all of you, my Indiana friends understand my new illness, and can put up with my constant questions and thirst for poultry knowledge. Because I fear it isn't going away any time soon. I just thought you all should know this. Thanks for reading.

Watching SNL with my peeps...

You made me laugh my butt off reading your post!! I haven't eaten chicken since I got my girls just over 2 wks ago. I even have a hard time eating the eggs (not cooking them). They are just so pretty and they worked so hard to give them to me and I take such delight in collecting them lol! We want a hobby farm eventually and my husband wants to butcher our own meat but I absolutely know there is no way I can eat my own animals. My husband hunts and fishes and I feel bad for the deer and fish for pete sakes. He thinks I'm crazy I just tell him "Yes I know that's what happens to the animals to get the meat from the store but I'd prefer not to see its cute little face before I attempt to eat it. I fear I'm well on my way to vegetarianism and I'm planning a large garden! Hehehehe :)
