Welcome to the Indiana BYC thread!Soon-to-be first time poultry owner here! Glad to see so many people in Indiana as well!Anyone hatch ducklings around the Wabash Valley area? Was going to order mine from Metzer but I'd rather buy local if I can!
Hey, I see I was tagged about this. I'm not well versed in selecting breeders, so I don't know how much help I'll be. I know that leakage is VERY difficult to get rid of later on the line, so he probably wouldn't be a great choice unless you want to go for a project type of thing. No idea on the beak color, whether it's as difficult or not to breed away from? Sorry, that's all I've got.
Since I'm here, howdy everyone!Been super busy this semester, so posting hasn't been much of a priority, unfortunately! I'm in senior seminar this semester with a project comparing the subtle effects of invasive plants to the more obvious effects of invasive animals on native bird species, which I'm pretty excited about! I also have a presentation to plan in another class about chickens as an invasive species, because I had to get them in there somehow.
On top of that, I'm planning some hatches this spring, including setting some eggs from my Black Copper Marans pair this weekend so that they hatch over spring break. I'm hoping to find out a little bit more behind the color of my rooster, Murph, who came out of BCMs but is more of a golden color. So, odds are pretty high I'll have a ton of pictures by then.
Here are the prospective parents, Murphy and Nadine (clearly not recent pictures because everything is snowy and blah around here right now...) :

I'm also planning on hatching some more Dorkings, because I just need more Dorks in my life. And more munchkins, of course, because who could resist faces like this one?

So, I have lots of chickies in my future!

What qualities do you want with the new chickens, egg color, eye candy? That helps us suggest breeds you might enjoy.Ok, so looking to add to my flock this spring. I am thinking mid april or early May. That would give me time to get a new coop situation around too.
I have been looking at certain breeds of chickens, but what are your favorites? I currently have 3 Isa Browns and one EE. These were given to me as I did not choose them. I am only wanting to add 2 maybe 3 chickens at this time. Because, I also want to get a couple of ducks (or 3).
Suggestions are welcome.![]()
I have never had a mean Orp and trust me I have had a lotta roosters!@Faraday40 he is very pretty. Are orpington roosters more docile and friendly than other roosters? That is what I have read, but I don't have any experience with roosters.
I am in southern Indiana, Mitchell
I raise bantam Phoenix ( silver golden red and white colors) bantam mottled Cochins and standard blue laced red wyandottes.

Inquisitve and Friendly. I like my chickens and they seem friendly enough. My EE is pretty, but she is a little more skiddish than I would like. I don't know if all EEs are like that though because of their "mutt" genetics. Honestly, egg color is not high on my list of why I would choose a chicken. But, I would like to get eggs. I don't need them to lay every day. As it is now, we get 3 per day and that is just enough for us. When the EE is laying, we get 4 eggs/day. So, once I add more chickens, I know we will have excess. I think the Isa Browns are inquisitve and friendly, but then they aren't going to win a fahsion show. What qualities do you want with the new chickens, egg color, eye candy? You would enjoy orps, they are in your lap friendly if raised to be and lots of color. Some of my EEs are flighty but with our situation, I want them to be. All my birds are on a rotation for free range. I highly recommend Muscovy, more social and cleaner than pekin derived breeds. I kept Snowy Mallards a while too and adored them.Inquisitve and Friendly. I like my chickens and they seem friendly enough. My EE is pretty, but she is a little more skiddish than I would like. As far as ducks, I think I have narrowed down my choices to welsh harlequin and/or muscovies. Maybe one day I will have both!
