INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

All the chickens found a new home south of Bargersville today. Little girl was very happy to have some Silkies of her own.

They didn't have room in their car, a crate enough or the cash to get the turkeys, so I'm keeping Jake and Penny for now. They might be back later to pick up those two, but if they don't come back, I'll hang onto the turk-turks, I think. I raised them from eggs. However, if I don't find a new home for them, I'll wind up with more birds again... more turkeys, probably quail and maybe pheasants. Jake needs a home with more hens, but they're both mixed breeds, so nobody's going to want them except to eat them.

Poor Jake's so confused now. He's been pacing and gobbling at the fence, looking for his chickens. :(

Aww poor Jake! I am glad to hear this though. I am sure its a lot of stress off you.

So I've been mixing Barley and Wheat together all this time for my fodders grass. Last week I thought about seeing which is growing better. Turns out Barley grows much faster by it's self then wheat. When combined, it takes 9-10 days to grow to my liking's. Barley by it's self grows to my liking's in 6-7 days.
Bottom shelf 1st is Barley on the left , 2nd is Wheat on the right on same day.

Here is my new addition. A nice couple caught him worried about the cold drops we have been getting and decided to give him to me. He has the white head gene that I personally don't like. Plus I have too many drakes. So I much try to re-home or donate for butchering all my extra drakes. He is so sweet. Loves to be petted and follows you around everywhere. Very gentle with my other drakes, and non of them try fighting each other. He belonged to the couples neighbors who breed lavender Muscovy's. He is split to lavender. Their neighbors decided to keep one of his lavender son's for breeding as his replacement. He is only 2 years old.

IMG_2974.JPG Nicknamed Kemo. 8 month old drake. A 11 year old girl was given a duckling as a cheering up gift when her leukemia came back. The duck turned out to be a drake, and was to remind her to keep fighting and to never give up. She named him Kemo. Sadly she pasted away 6 months after receiving him. Her parents couldn't handle keeping him around. So they re-homed him to me. He has been on my farm for 2 months now. Very kind and loving. Sadly he too has the white head gene I do not like. So he must go as well. I have no clue as to his gene pool.

I gave the chickens away for free, but the turkeys I'd asked money for, so that might also explain it (though, if they took the turkeys, I was going to give them all of my other poultry related stuff, food, bedding, etc, so they'd be more than getting the money back).

Jake Jake hadn't been on his best behavior when they came to visit. He was upset because I was catching and caging his friends. Now both of the turk turks are mopey and no amount of treats is perking them up. Time will tell.

Think Penny might be working up to broody. She was hissing a bit at me Saturday while on a nest. If she does decide to, I'll give her some eggs. They have been mating because she's missing some feathers on her neck, but they're a shy couple, apparently.

Mine aren't laying yet but suspect its coming.

Having issues with fertility, so I did some more feather trims. This time on the hens.

Here's my very personal question: Is this enough trimming? (pic below) I don't want the hens to lose their pretty fluffy-pantiloons, but I do want to get some hatchable eggs.

I trimmed above & below the vent. I've done it in the past to reduce sticky poop, but never needed to for fertility. None of the trimming shows unless her tail is lifted like below pic.

It's enough if you get hatchable eggs. Warmer weather is going to up libido and decrease fluff too, so it may be that you're better off waiting for Mother Nature to kick fertility in gear.

Does any fellow Indiana'ers know of anyone with a male border collie? I'd like to breed my girl Nova only once before I get her fixed. She is pure bred with pedigree. Up to date on all shots.
