INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

@jchny2000

I highly recommend Ruth Stout's book, "Gardening without Work", and method for stopping the weeds. Read it over the winter and see what you think :) No wood chips needed - only hay from a field that hasn't been sprayed .

Hello All - I just wanted to say Hey -- I live in Central Indiana and am a newbie on here, and a newbie to raising baby chicks. We have 14 pullets and 2 roosters (1 was supposed to be a pullet). I'm searching for the ordinances; my hubby says we're under the county laws not the town. I'm a bit concerned as we're not in an addition nor do we have a HOA, however our yard backs up to an addition with a HOA, and the town we're near likes to extend their "hand" well beyond what they should, and we have a mean neighbor - hates animals and has his little perfect yard to pick over (like mowinig daily, 6-8 swipes over the same areas...lol.... he's very active canoeing etc, just a bit nasty. Anyone else with this?

Welcome! Don't have problems here as we're zoned agricultural.

If you're allowed to have hens and roosters where your house and land are zoned don't let your neighbors bully you. I would find out ASAP what your zoning is and what you're allowed.

I had a small area of hay bales last year, and used the same area again this year. This spring while cleaning the ponds we put all the muck over the hay bales from last year, and planted basil and extra tomato plants. Did really well, and no weeds grew through, or even sprouted.

This fall I'm going to make a larger area in the big garden with (chemical free of course) hay bales. We have some noxious weeds here with an aggressive root system that I cannot get rid of, so I'm going to try the hay bales over that area, and see if it helps.

Call your county's Cooperative Extension office. They can direct you where to get the paper "in hand", and what your local laws are, who to talk to. You have the same situation as I. We are zoned agriculture, but a few years back the town if Ingalls annexed us! :mad: So several of us are pretty dismayed what the future will bring. Thus far I have chickens, up to cows and other livestock.

Just moved from Madison Indiana to just across the bridge in Louisville Ky (west end).

Anyone near by? I would love to find a local source for eggs until my girls are laying reliably.

So today I was in my yard looking around for a nice spot to start building my Muscovys, chickens, and quails pens when our neighbor came out to ask me ,"What are you doing? Your walking around like a loonitick!". I told him what I was doing and he said in a loud tone, "NO ROOSTERS".

Welcome to BYC! Glad you could join us!

Thanks for the advise ~ I will be calling. I'd like to have a copy of the ordinances just in case our neighbor gives us any trouble.
Good luck with your situation too! I really do hate how some towns are taking over our freedom of what we have on our land.
