INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So today I was in my yard looking around for a nice spot to start building my Muscovys, chickens, and quails pens when our neighbor came out to ask me ,"What are you doing? Your walking around like a loonitick!". I told him what I was doing and he said in a loud tone, "NO ROOSTERS".
I know in most areas you're allowed 1 rooster, but he must be housed dusk to dawn. The 1 neighbor we have trouble with has a dog that loves to bark, which he does at late as 11:30pm and as early as 4:30am -- good thing I love animals HA!

UGH! :ducFind out what the chicken laws are for your new home.
Thank you!! I just asked to join :) I am in the big one but had no idea there were regional ones!
We started it a few years ago, I asked Kelly to do the facebook page, since I started this thread on BYC. I am not on FB much so it would have been difficult to do both. The discussion there is mostly pet chickens. On our thread here we do discuss other animals, life events and an occasional random rant :old if needed lol!

:welcomeWelcome to BYC and our thread :frow!
Call your county's Cooperative Extension office. They can direct you where to get the paper "in hand", and what your local laws are, who to talk to. You have the same situation as I. We are zoned agriculture, but a few years back the town if Ingalls annexed us! So several of us are pretty dismayed what the future will bring. Thus far I have chickens, up to cows and other livestock.

We also have a facebook page

Hopefully will help you connect with people close to you.
Joined the FB page. Thank you!

8 more CX (Cornish Cross meat chicken) in the freezer tonight. Think I have 9 left to go and that will be it until winter when I process my goat wethers. Unless I can sell my guineas they will be going to freezer camp too, as well as the Pekin & mixes. Those flocks want to go out by the road, can't have that!
My teen leghorns are all settled and established with the adults now, free ranged today as a full flock. This newest method of comingling really worked out well. Foghorn, the adult rooster calls and all 7 girls and his son come running! He doesn't attack the son but the young cockerel seems to know not to push it. The EE comingled flock was out yesterday and did great too.
My DB (Dear Brother) has offered to pay for Moose's processing (my Jersey bull) and I have said before, I am not too much in favor of a butcher shop. Your ground meat is mixed with several other cows, you aren't getting your own hamburger back. The reason for that is equipment usage. Large grinders are expensive to operate & clean so they do large batches. I don't know what those other cows ate, and how they were treated, vaccinated, dewormed, overall husbandry. If I can specify little to none ground beef, I might do it. Has anyone had good/bad experience with Knightstown butcher shop? They seem to have the best reputation between my choices nearby. I always process my own animals but with fall coming we have a lot of indoor work coming up.

We live outside of city limits. I spoke to a Lake County Official and he said we are allowed to own any animals and as many as we want, as long as they have proper housing and proper permits. My neighbor just doesn't want a rooster crowing when he is sleeping during the day. He works night shift at the mills. I only plan to have chickens to do brooding for me. So the rooster isn't an issue, until I get the hatching bug for chicken eggs.. Hopefully Muscovy's and Quails hold me over!

You might ask your butcher if they will keep your meat totally separate from all the others. Some will do it. If they refuse, is there somewhere else you can go?

Ours (that we purchase, grass fed from a local farm) is an Amish processor that has this facility right on their property (inspected, of course). We've never had an issue with them!

Will there ever be a Indiana BYC get together? I remember reading about one a long time ago before I joined.

I had hope to arrange a gathering in northern IN 2 years ago. My Moms declining health stopped me from being able to be away. It may still happen but I need other folks willing to help plan for it as well. Many of the members that were going to be involved are no longer on the thread.

I am going to call them, get some of my questions answered. there are 2 others but one is in Greencastle, the 2nd I have not heard good things about. Just asking folks locally, I have not heard a negative thing about Knightstown.

I'm sorry to hear that! :hugs
I'm all in for helping plan! I'd love to meet everyone on here!
