Thank you. It feels never-ending right now, but I logically know things will return to a new normal at some point. For multiple reasons, we have to wait until Thurs for the dog's appointment.

Saying a prayer and sending a big hugI'm still very sad about Precious, but Tillie did her best to keep me occupied today.
She somehow hopped the chicken fence or sneaked through an open door. Around 11am I heard the egg song coming from our screened room & saw Tillie walking out. I scooped her up, put her back over the fence, & went to "her" cardboard box from yesterday.

It was empty. Since a few hens sing the egg song BEFORE laying an egg, I didn't worry much. By 3pm, there was still no little white Tillie egg in the coop. DH & I decided to clear out some of the junk in the screened room...... You guessed it. We found her egg!
DH shouted: I found it! I'm the winner! The egg was in the back corner on a bottom shelf. 1.) Why does Tillie insist on hopping the fence to explore our screened room, and 2.) why did she decide that's a good place to lay her eggs?
I again really needed the distraction. Besides Precious, our 11 yr old Great Dane/ Lab mix is failing. He can no longer stand up without assistance and is having multiple accidents daily. The kids have known the dog as a family member for as long as they can remember. He'll be going to the vet Mon or Tues. I can't imagine our house without him.
It's been a very long, horrible day.
Our 11 yr old "Richter" is the handsome, younger dog who acts like a puppy but has had mast cell tumors - type of cancer- for the past 3 years. He always loved to chase squirrels, rabbits, skunks, etc., but left the chickens alone. He got sprayed by a skunk about 2 weeks ago & also tore his ligament in the midst of the chase. After de-skunking we treated the leg with anti-inflammatory meds from our vet & rest. We expected him to recover in about a month. He stopped eating/drinking yesterday, but didn't have much appetite for several days. (Unusual for him, but I thought it was caused by his pain.) We brought him into the vet again & had to put him down this morning. His body was shutting down due to liver failure. Probably the slow growing cancer damaged his liver & other organs but there were no symptoms. The recent trauma + drugs pushed him over the edge. Even with his injured leg, he jumped around on 3 legs & wanted to chase squirrels. I just can't believe our perpetual puppy is gone & that he died before Shockley.

Our 11 - almost 12 - yr old dog Shockley has always been a mature, calm, comforter. He was an old soul - even as a puppy. He's been declining slowly & I never thought he'd live this long. He can no longer stand up unassisted & has multiple accidents daily. Because of our daughter's health, he's been her comfort. We scheduled his final appointment for tomorrow.

As anyone with dogs knows, they become not just a pet, but part of the family. I can't imagine how empty our house will be by tomorrow afternoon. The two dogs grew up with our kids. To lose both in 24 hrs is unreal.
