INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

My Dominiques have always been great layers. They were an April hatch, and started laying in October and continued all winter!
My Dominique & Orpingtons layed through the winter (as long as not in molt), and my spring-hatched Leghorn is still laying an egg a day. Tillie hasn't skipped a single day yet! For me it was only the blue & green eggers (& my Welsummer) that stop producing over the winter.

This weekend the new kids are 22 weeks old. Everyone looks like an adult, but some of them still have very pale combs and wattles.

3 are Dominiques (and 2 cockerels)
3 are buff O's
3 are Laced O's
3 are "Charlies" (Sold as Ameraucanas from the hatchery...they're all Charlie-Birds to me and, of course, there's a story behind that.)

At what age did your pullets start laying?

My June hatched orps - a few weeks older than yours - are huge but no combs/wattles yet. I'm guessing they won't lay until late Feb/ early March when the days get longer..... so 8-9 months. The youngest my orps have started is 6 months - but that's when they hit maturity during the sunny summer when days are long.

I made a mistake. They're 23 weeks this weekend. 6 mos. would put them out about mid-December.

Lucy the laced orp is getting redder wattles I noticed today.

I'm betting that most will start end of Jan/beginning Feb.

Look who likes the snow....

How is that boy doing? Is he fitting in pretty well? What about the kids...are they loving him?

He's a puppy.... so lots of work. (19 weeks & 42 lbs) He loves everyone & we took him on a brief walk today. We're crate training him and that's going well. Very few accidents but like all puppies, he wants to chew and get into things. He's very intelligent, so that's taking some getting used to. Our former dogs were simply loving, willing to please & obedient. This boy sometimes has his own agenda and has problem solving abilities. When we put something away, he quickly figures out how to get to the object of his desire. He already knows how to get by any baby gate in seconds and now mouths doorknobs to get into rooms where we don't want him. Other times, he's just the sweetest cuddle puppy & melts into your arms when being pet. I think with lots of training, he's going to be a remarkable dog.

He already has a different relationship with each family member. DD & I are his favorites. He definitely likes the girls. DS is his playmate. They will run & chase each other throughout the house. DS has the job of burning off the excess puppy energy. DH is Kepler's daytime companion. Kepler sleeps next to DH's desk while he works from home. Of course when Kepler hears me, he drops DH comes running for my attention. Likewise, as soon as he hears that DD is awake, he'll get past all the baby gates and end up scratching at her bedroom door.
