INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

We butchered three roosters Saturday morning. Here's who two of them were.

The barred one was especially gentle and a nice boy, which I just found out when carrying to the killing cone that morning. All of the boys I've raised (or by broody hen) of that color/mix have been very nice. He was the last one that I'll have of this kind, since I don't have the dad any longer.

I had a brief misunderstanding....... This post followed a few other posts talking about guns & permits. I read it very literally.
I'm sure you won't be shooting any of your chickens.
:lau No lets hope not! I only have my base flock for next years plans!
lol, i will try not to shoot for any of my chickens, unless i have to cull a rooster ;)

Gorgeous! The barred fella was a beauty. Its a shame but flock management.. we do what we have to. I'm holding on to 2 backup roosters in the rooster pen. After last year I don't want to be searching for roosters early spring.
I've got 4 Muscovy drakes I have to cull before hormones kick in. The fights get so terrible they will just tear each other to shreds.

This is such a busy time of year! Christmas shopping done, everything for family dinner is bought. Turkey is brining 21lbs! Youngest DD is hosting this year at her home, so that's a huge help. Our family's dinner is the 23rd. When I was little my parents went to the uncle's Christmas day. It was nice to see cousins, but we watched them open gifts, had to wait until we got home for ours. Parents with small kids, let their early memories be waking up and opening presents with you Christmas Day. We spend the day with my Dad, Brother and his wife, exchange gifts between us. We go out to Richmond to see my other Mom & Dad (in-law) in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day with them.
What's your Christmas plans? Are you the host/do the cooking, love to hear.

One last post.. next few days, more remodeling! My oldest DB has been coming a few days a week to help me finish my kitchen remodel. Pics coming soon. He is a whiz at countertops and drywall. We are also converting a storage area next to dads bedroom into a dressing room. Open spaced wheelchair accessible. 36" doorway, and easily accessed in case of medical emergency. The original bedroom door is 28" and a gurney won't fit. Our final months with Mom we realized we need better access to them for emergencies. Dads PCP has said he won't be walking much longer so it's time we make these changes in his side of the house. His knees are failing and is not a candidate for surgery.

They were in their separate area, but were escaping, and I don't think the barred one chased anyone, but the red one did.

I plan to keep and breed Dominiques, and Ameraucanas and may have to keep a few extra roosters in their own pad then. Will have to secure the fencing more.

I have one extra muscovy drake, and his hormones just started kicking in, and think we'll have to butcher him. It hasn't worked out here to have more than one drake. Husband saved our permanent drake last year from nearly being drowned by a younger one.

We're talking about kitchen remodeling. We recently had a kitchen island built and picked it up. It looks like a monument compared to the rest of the kitchen. Our cupboards are crappy, and floor, and the previous homeowners did a lot of renovating (it's a 100 year old house), and so they had to cut costs somewhere.

Isn't that bittersweet-to put something new in that looks GREAT, but then shows how dated everything else is? That's always MY luck, too!
