Hello
I purchased 4 prairie blue egger last October . However one of the “pullets” I got the suspicion that it could be a rooster . They are only 3 months old. This chicken in question , the feather is more beautiful than the other three ( white , brown , green)

What you guys think?

i think your suspicions are correct.....should hear some attempted crows during the next month as most of mine started trying at 3.5-4 months

Hey @Rosie65! I candles my eggs today and out of the six I put in, I’ve got three that I for sure saw development and two that are maybes. One was a yolker. :) that’s great luck!

A follow up question for anyone in general, I’m guessing that as I’m on day six, I wouldn’t want to place additional fertilized eggs under the broody now that I have confirmed growth in a few of them. That’s a week difference between hatch dates. I’m guessing the broody would have moved on by then. Thoughts?

Congrats on the development!

I don't recommend adding eggs to your hen's clutch at this point. One day difference can be managed but more than that will confuse the hen & likely end in sorrow. If you happen to add newly hatched chicks under your hen at the same time her eggs are hatching, she will likely adopt. However, some hens can get very defensive and refuse to adopt ANY new chicks by day 2-3. The chicks really should be all added at hatch. I once tried to slip a late hatched chick back under her mama & the mama tried to kill it - protecting her bigger 3 day old chicks from the tiny invading wobbling hatchling.

I have one hen who will easily adopt extra chicks, but I've found her to be more of an exception. She once had chicks ages 3 weeks down to 5-6 days. She also brooded some turkeys & even had some quail for a short time. (The quail were only here for a few days between a school program and their future home. Rather than set up a temp cage, I put them in my chick brooder & the broody hen kept the peace.) As mentioned, she's an exception. I would never try such a thing with any of my other broody hens.

Rooster for sure, handsome fella! The long pointed saddle and tail feathers give it away.

That's too far apart she would abandon the newer eggs, care for the chicks that hatched normally.
