Glad the fermented feed is working, you are really going to see a difference in the feed bill.

I don't have a clear answer on this yet, mostly bc I'm lazy I admit, but do you keep the food/water always outside the coop, always inside, or have some in both places?

Which is better for rodent control, or to keep it away from squirrels/birds etc, or what does everyone do? I know in the winter the water will be inside the coop, with a warmer to keep it from freezing.

This is what I do...
Right now in the nicer weather we have a 5 gallon feeder in the coop with their starter feed in it. Out in the run they get their treats and other stuff that they will eat up quickly (so not to attract other animals to the run).

Our 5 gallon waterer is outside in the run. We just made it. It is a 5 gal. Menards bucket with 5 chicken nipples on the bottom. We have it outside just to see if it leaks or not. If it does not leak then we will make one for inside the coop, as well. I wouldn't put one inside at all, but I feel guilty when they can't come out in the flooded run for a good portion of the day.

On the topic of Easter-eggers versus Ameraucanas versus Araucanas - I am certainly no expert, but as I am very much interested in breeding Ameraucanas one day, I have put in a lot of research.

Araucanas - You can almost guarantee you don't have an Araucana unless you went to a breeder for them. Exceptionally rare, they are blue-egg-laying birds that are rumpless, as in they do not have tails, and tufted, not bearded. The tufts are only on the sides of their heads, quite different from the beards of the other two. Some Araucana colorations even have yellow legs, something that from my understanding is a no-no with Ameraucanas.

Ameraucanas - Ameraucanas are similar in shape to Easter-eggers--or, more truthfully, Easter-eggers are similar in shape to Ameraucanas--but there are many differences between them. Ameraucanas should lay blue eggs and have slate legs. They should also be of the several recognized colors or of the project colors. A bird can be pure Ameraucana, but if it is not a recognized color, it is considered an Easter-egger. Some even say that the project colors are Easter-eggers because they are not recognized colors. Pedigree has little to do with it.

Easter-egger - Perhaps the most interesting of the three, the Easter-egger is a name for any non-standard bird that could potentially be a carrier of the blue-egg gene. Many Easter-eggers do not actually carry the blue-egg gene and lay brown eggs instead, but they descended from blue-egg layers, which is why they are called as one. Interestingly enough, because of this definition, one could have a cross between a cream Legbar or another blue egg layer and still call it an Easter-egger - as long as the bird can potentially carry the blue egg gene, it doesn't necessarily have to be a descendant of an Ameraucana or Araucana directly.

So essentially, if you got your 'Ameraucana' from a hatchery, the feed store, or anyone that spells it as 'Americana', you most likely are not the owner of a true Ameraucana. And, unless you looked specifically for them, you probably don't have an Araucana, either.

For anyone that does not know for sure if they have an Ameraucana or an Easter-egger, the Ameraucana Breeders Club has pictures of every color for you to compare your birds to: http://www.ameraucana.org/scrapbook.html They also have the standard for Ameraucanas, both bantam and large fowl, if anyone wants to read: http://www.ameraucana.org/standard.html

From Mother2Hens to Shawna: Congrats on your new chick! Since you were the one worried about having "mutt" chickens, I thought you might be interested in pipd's recent post in case you didn't see it. We discussed the differences between those breeds and our EEs. I'm not in ANY way suggesting that you don't have a true Aruacana, I just thought you might find the info interesting. Some chicken buffs get bent out of shape about "which is what," but pipd and I are happy with our unique EEs! haha to the Buffs!

I have a question my chicks are 5 weeks I have 19 red pullets and 2 white turkeys that age and then I have 6 RIR and 2 bronze turkeys that are 2 weeks old. The last couple of day they have taken and dug down to the bottom of the bow and for the wood chips every where. I go straten it up and 5 mins later it is the same way. It is not is one spot it is the hole box. I have cleaned it and then they just start all over again. there is plenty of water and food.

I think they have the natural foreging thing going on. Like sand bathing. My coop has several spots where they have pulled all the material off the floor to get to the dirt. For the bigger ones I found an old sled and filled that with dirt and sand so they no longer (well less likely) to dig up the flooring or use the poop board for a bath.

I am constantly cleaning out the water and food for the little chicks due to digging and throwing chips around. Even if you put some form of designated bath in there for them, they will still dig at the floor. Could you maybe use less chips? Minimize the mess?

Anybody here in randolph county? And who else has plymouth rock? I have 2 barreds hatchery, just hatched my very first batch they are breeder blue, black, splash. I will have a few roos 4 i think if anyone is interested cant keep them in town.

Dandelions for jelly????

Back home we have a drink called 'Danelion and Burock'. It is the best pop ever. When I am feeling flush I buy it online and have it shipped over.

We also have a dandelion tea you drink if you have a bad stomache.

Although I am sure the pop does not have any medicial benefits. Sure the sugar offsets that

Welcome to the thread. On several of our members signatures there is a link to our members page. It lists area and breeds. Might help you narrow down your search.
