INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Meet Virginia! We picked this little lady up driving home from a great vaca in West Virginia as a sweet little souvenir. She was marked as an Araucana which clearly shes not, she has a tail! Lol! I wasn't able to chose her they had the chicks in a weird cage almost like a bread loaf carrier at the store but closed all the chicks were very skittish clearly not handled often. They scooped her up and stuck her in a box and taped it shut and $3.60 later we have sweet little Virginia hahaha. I know a lot of hatcheries sell Araucana, Ameraucanas, EE all the same because they carry the blue egg gene. I have an EE hen but shes not this dark and I know they come in a ton of colors.

Soooo what do you all think Miss West Virginia Holler is?? I'm hoping for the blue/green/olive egg gene. :)

Really hard to tell, might be some earmuffs there? Are her legs dark? Kinda looks like it...the head shape is actually kinda Araucana, but I've had Ams with the 'crow-head'.

Shawnascott, 8x10 equals 80 sq ft. For happy chickens, allow 3.5-4 sq ft per chicken. So, 20-25 max for 80 sq ft. For the run, build it big enough for 10 sq ft per chicken, enclosed for predator protection. Don't forget about attacks from above!

Old Salt, loved your story and pictures of the chickens. Your coop is great looking, but you aren't too good at chicken math, eh? Got a few more than intended. Ducks are fun.

Idymelissande, funny how you say they are starting to smell a bit in the laundry room. Don't forget that the coop needs to be well-ventilated, even in winter. How old are they? Big early waddles means possible roosters. My 10 week old SLW started some pathetic crowing yesterday. He has big waddles and a big rose comb. Full of testosterone, he is.
There are 8 of them in the dog crate, its becoming a tight fit and they are having entirely too much fun kicking poo out the front of the cage. I have been looking a the coop pictures on this site for three months or more planning how I want to build it. honestly they are no worse than the litter box, but its harder to clean when they wont cooperate.

OMG! Has anybody here been on the FB group Ameraucana Chickens? Never again! The most critical, snobby @$$es Ive ever "met" Holy crap. I posted a pic of one of my Ameraucana chicks and people are fighting and being rude and have thier noses in the air! More snide comments and "advice" that I never asked for in my life! Even after I made it very clear I didn't want opinions! Oh did I mention that someone on the page said the people on BYC are not friendly???? I've NEVER had a snide remark or harsh word on BYC. I love this place! Sorry people. Had to vent!
Really! I will be sure to never get on there. And people on BYC are extremly nice I have only came across a few people that I have had a disagreement with. And it was never over anything big (mostly because computers dont show emoion lol) but anyways ther a ton of friendly people on this website. Kinda makes me what to get on facebook just to tell them how nice everyone is on here. I swear the nerves of some people!lol :).

The bantams I bought are 6 weeks old today. We are guessing we have 4 roos and hopefully 4 hens.

At least one of the D'uccles is a boy looks like both of the tentative golden seabrights are boys and one of the possible easter eggers.

They are doing very well drinking out of the rabbit bottle so I am thinking I will buy another and put the spouts on 2 liter bottles to make sure they get enough water each day.

The whole fencing class was slacking off to watch them walking around in the playpen. great distractions

Miss Virginia , I would say is an EE. Usually you just get the chipmunk colored EEs,but occasionaly you get the little oddballs. Like this one lol. I had 3 that looked like her. here is a pick of my most recent one that looked similar to her.

We were using our dog crate also but then had to add on. I had started making a tractor of sorts using some old wood we had around and some 1/2 wire. If you wanted too, you could just use chicken wire because its cheaper. We layed heavy plastic on the floor and then surrounded the whole thing with broken down boxes to keep the mess contained. Where the box flaps normally fold went right under so it even holds itself up. We just added a couple if 2x4 roost inside and then a small bin lid I had laying around under to make cleaning up the shavings easier. The additional run Backs right up to the crate door. Not pretty but it helped us have more time to finish the coop. I have some pics, maybe even on my profile but I can't add them from my phone. Good luck with your coop! Ours is taking forever.

thanks CRselvey. I have a ton of scrap stuff to make a tractor with, I forgot I can get one set up that would work great for summer and then make the snow proof one while using the other. It doesn't have to be rated to 40 below when its 80 outside. :)

Also if I don't move them out my son may get more tail feathers for his collection. He got 3 on mothers day, 4 year olds don't always understand how to pet the chickens.
