INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

The SLW I got from you crowed once yesterday. I sound louder and better when trying to discretely clear my throat.
John
I am glad he held off until he left then! My D'Uccle must have practiced while I was away, because he doesn't sound too terrible. Like a hacking crow.

My guesses were nebiors dogs that i have called the sheriff on before twice for eating my ducks and chickens and they still continue to not chin them or keep them in house. So they are avpossibility. I was alsi thinking a fox or racoon. I ruled out avhawk because they couldnt pick somethingvthat big clean id meat in a night plus they wouldnt go in the coop. Rule out ground hogs because the are herbivores. I ruled out cyotes because they wouldnt go in the coop because they too skitish ( i constantly have avradio playing outside too) A weasel couldnt eat that many chickens. Do you guys have any guesses? Remember the picked cleanvofvmeatvdownvto the bone. Also whatever it is it must not be too afraid of humans because i have a radio playing( human voice). And it has to be able to fit through a lf sized chicken hole.
I don't think it was a dog. I have seen a lot of animal attacks, both by pet and feral animals. If a pet dog, even a starving one, attacked your chickens, it would not eat all it killed, and it definately wouldn't be picked clean. For a dog to even remotely been large enough to eat all of them (assuming they are LF) a lot of the bones would probably be missing. When my dogs attack birds, even the larger ones like crows, he will eat the entire thing. Bones, beak, and all. I'm not saying that's true for every dog, but that's generally what has happened for me.

Again, I don't agree with the cat attacking either. The only type of cat that would eat it is a feral or "barn" cat, most family pets only kill for fun. A cat couldn't eat that many and would drag it off to where ever it lived. I've not had a whole lot of experience with cats, but I can't imagine my Dinah being able to kill a full size chicken. She is somewhat of a wimp though.

me too. after how horrible the year started off i am really excited with how wonderful things have become. it was a rough start but we believe this has also been the best year of our lives. here is a shot of our property i lined out in google earth with the help of my gps. there is a lot of elevation change on the property but it will work out perfect for all the critters. :D

M2H, thank you for sharing your experience with the Dalai Lama. I had the opportunity a few years back in Bloomington and was overwhelmed with the compassion and wisdom that he shared.

'Nuther note, went to the Kentuckiana show this weekend; brought home 2 dark silkies from paint pens to pair with my paint silkies. Swore I wasn't going to buy anything. The Lucasville Ohio show is this weekend, so we'll see how I stick to my guns there.

Crafty, I have several silkie chicks that aren't old enough to sex yet. I'm close to you, so if you still need some when they're old enough....

Thanks for letting me know! I usually keep up with this Thread since I am one of the regular volunteers, but I was really busy the past week or so catching up with work. I've read all the posts, but hurriedly. I remember reading that someone who just joined read the entire Thread!-- so I am planning to at least re-read the past week more carefully because there are such interesting posts.

Just let me know anytime about your avatar and I will be happy to help!

i went ahead and done it myself since i knew it wouldn't take anytime to make. didn't see a point in having you make it when i could do it myself. :D

I keep seeing people suggesting cats as a possibility for the chickens, I am sitting here thinking... No.. I just don't see it.. They are private eaters and will drag off whatever they kill and hide it while they eat it.
However...depending on what part of indiana you live in and how rural the location you can not rule out a bobcat.
Not sure why I did not think of that last night.
I keep thinking domestic cats... I guess I was basing that off my location and what would eat my chickens here.
I have domestic cats around them. But most of them are afraid of the chickens. Except for the tom cats. They rub up against the chickens and pure other than that they leave them alone. But all of them are afraid of the rooster, because he chases them. It is kind of funny but sometimes I feel bad forthe cats. Now a bobcat. I dont think anyone has seen one in my area. I live in wells county and the closest I have ever heard of one being reported is brown county.
