Hi! I'm in South Bend. I'm just about ready to order chicks. Trying to get through the conflicting issues with local ordinances. South Bend just passed an ordinance allowing chickens in the city. I live at a county address just outside city annexed area. I'm being told by local authorities I need 5 acres. I've spoken with my county council member. The ordinance reads "agricultural uses." Not sure what I'm going to do yet.-Ralph

I'm originally from South Bend. I think that's crazy that in SB city limits you can have 5 hens, but in your area just outside the city you need a 5 acre min. Maybe you can convince them they are pets, and not ag use.

if they are laying eggs, he will be their dream guy. go for it. Hens will squat fast for a mature roo but watch their back and wings..

i am always swapping so we have a lot of temporary pens. I am setting a few breeder cages using hoop coops. My wyandottes are going up for sale and am changing to different breeds.The BCM have just stole my heart they are just sweethearts.

These are the ones I got from Brad so they are around 7-8 weeks old. I would like to introduce a roo, sooner rather than later so there is less stress when they do finally lay. They had time to grow up together. I think a year old rooster might be pushing it and he might just be manly enough to be too pushy and demanding.
I could always let my Mille have a go.... If only he wasn't so much smaller than the fluff balls.. Might be funny watching him attempt it and who knows what the end results would be.

I don't think it would be hard setting up a chicken estate with smaller coops for each of the breeds. Need to keep batting the eyelids at DH... Tell him it will be worth it in the end.

Well, I just caught up with the 80 posts in the last 18 hours, and John took it easy on you!

I was worried about my rooster going crazy and territorial. He is just wonderful right now. When we are inside the coop, he does not investigate us like the girls do. He probably will never eat treats from my hand, but will eyeball the girls are they do so and take whatever is left on the floor. He does not give us a wide berth but will walk off if you try touching him. DH periodically grabs him and gives a belly rub. I am sure he hates it and I have asked DH to stop terrorizing my poor roo.
His spurs are looking bigger and I expect claws growing from them any day, but with his current temperament I expect he will be here for many years,
All the things I read about rooster being crazy and the vast majority needing to be removed kinda scared me. I think with all the good handling and social interaction with the family as a chick means he is comfortable with us and does not feel threatened.

If you live where you could keep chickens discretely (not hidden, but just not publicizing) or if your neighbors are fine with chickens, (I give mine free eggs every couple of weeks and maintain a very nice relationship ), then I'd say go for it. That's absurd that you can have them in the city, but not the county. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Welcome to the thread Badgerralph! I was thinking the same thing-- you can have them in the city but not in the county? what the heck? I know every county is different. I have a Woodburn (Allen county) address and all of the ordinances are controlled by the county but since my house is zoned a certain way, I can have whatever I want, even though I have close neighbors all around me. Indiana is so backwards sometimes. Good luck with figuring out what you are going to do. I am with M2H, let your neighbors know (if you trust them) and then just do it.

i think socializing is always the way to go.I don't think, by the way you described him, that he will turn mean. i have had people tell me that you shouldn't hold, pet, cuddle, or anything like that, because it will make them mean.and that you shouldnt make pets out of them. I know people have different methods doing things, but I mean if the roo you have wants to turn mean he is going to turn mean wether you socialize him or leave him alone. But that just my opinion. i got my roo when he was a year and a half. The people that had him before were not very nice to him and never handeled him. and he dosent like to be messed with. He dosent like me or anyone else. But he is pretty and is good at protecting his hens, so I decided to let him hang around a while longer lol. Good luck with him.

Yes, both hens. They really are beautiful! That first picture is about the only picture I have that comes near to how they look in person.

Do any of you order chicks from hatcheries? And if so can you recommend a good 1? Iv been looking at a couple and iv been reading alot of not so good reviews. I don't like the idea of having babies shipped through the mail but iv run out of options and have to do something. Promised my 6 year old Antwerp quail chickens and have failed miserably at finding any locally or even semi locally. Lol any help to get me out of the dog house would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

i got Ms. Oreo from my neighbor and

I know this is not. Chicken related but does anyone know a home remedie to cure the cat cold??? Ms. Oreo has a cold she's sneezing and breathing weirdly any home remedies would help (if they dont hurt my cat) thanks

Animallover does she get her shots every year? High humidity and warm damp weather unfortunately promotes distemper. How old is oreo?

he doesn't know how old she is and no she doesn't get her yearly shots I just got her last year but I think she's 5 or 6
