INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Baby silkies have hatched. Not as great of a hatch for local eggs, but still happy. 15 made it to lockdown, 9 hatched. I would have been more happy with those numbers if they were all silkies, but instead got 2 Mille fleur d'uccle/ OEGB (i believe she said the roo is a blue wheaten?) mixes. I'm interested to see how they turn out though.

Well, after looking at my calendar I realized it's next weekend, not this weekend. So, I was going to go to the Wolf Lake swap, but I guess I'll be going next weekend now. Bums...
Ok, I'll be there too! I just wanted to make sure I had the right day for the Wolf Lake swap, too lol. You about gave me a heart attack lol

Yeah... I think I was just hoping that if I thought it was this weekend it would be. That's ok though. I have to finish the coop this weekend, so it's one less thing to try and fit in.

Must repeat over & over, "we have enough chickens, we have enough chickens, we have enough chickens..."

Guys, the wolf lake swap, does anyone ever see peafowl? We found out my DHs friend no longer has a hen. Planning to try to go! I also want to add more Pekin, they are just so sweet! Brad, the babies are ADORABLE!!!!!

Yes, there is almost always peafowl there. There are always Pekins too ;)
I also saw an ad on Craigslist of someone selling peahens. Ill post it if I find it again.

Awwwww!!!!!!!!!!

Spent hens are laying hens whose production falls off to the point that the feed costs more than the eggs sell for.

If she averaged 6 eggs/week and falls to 3, she should head for the stew pot. This usually occurs at 2 to 3 years of age.

Of course, for pets, it is an entirely different calculus.

John
Okay, that makes sense. Now I won't be so confused when I see it in the free ad paper.
