Tumbles, welcome to the thread. You will learn lots on here. So ask away, if we can we'll answer any questions you may have. There are quite a few people on here from the general Indy area, so you may find someone who can help you out even more if you have questions or issues.

Are you looking for a specific breed?
I don't have any, but knowing which breads you like might help others help you. Also attending poultry shows can help you find breeding trios or pairs. There are specific threads on here for most of the breads. You can research a few. Once you know what you want follow that breed's thread for a while or read a long history of that thread. There should be a few great breeders selling eggs and chicks. Once in contact with them, they will even help you learn all about breeding and sell you what you need to get going.
At least that is how the HRIR thread works. There are bantam breeders on there too, although personally I choose the large birds.

Hi, we are on the south side of Indy & have had chickens for 6 days. I love Tumbles & her flock. I don't know anything about chickens, other than what I've read here so any help, advise would be great!! We have a flock of 8 laying hens all different breeds.
You can see their pics in "raising chicks" all of my posts there start with " Tumbles...."
Hey tumbles what's up. We are in Indy also, and new to chickens this year as well. Yes there is a lot of great advice on this forum, I say read, research and read some more. That's how we've done it. We have 8, 4 different breeds. 2 turned out to be roosters.

Well we had our first crow this morning. Hershey on the top perch looked at us and tried. Not too bad. But I am guessing its true that half of them are boys. oh well.
First crow, eh? Sound like a young man when his voice is changing? Ours is sounding a bit more rooster-like this week. So far, our one crowing SLW only crows about 13 times in the morning, and haven't heard him any other time. He must've seen us cooking chicken on the grill the last couple days.

Poultry math has reared it's ugly head. I now have 6 baby turkey poults added to my collection. I'm really excited about them. My question is this: Once they get older, can I mix them in with my chickens? Or do I need a separate enclosure for them? I can't let anything free range here due to predator pressure, so I have the chickens in a mobile coop that I surround with electric poultry netting.

I bought some more netting, and I can make a separate enclosure, but would need to build a new coop for the turkeys. I can do that if I should keep them separate.

The other option is that My current (chicken) coop has plenty of extra room inside, and I could just add the new fencing to double the size of their enclosure.

I've heard that because of blackhead, you shouldn't have turkeys with chickens, but I've see pics posted on here and elsewhere of all the poultry mixed together. Not sure what to do, so I thought I would throw it out on here and see what advice I could get.

I really dont care what breed it is I have a breeding pair already there bantam cochins (Ms May and Mr Frizz) but I want a different breeding pair if I hatch my own new breeding pair then ill have to wait 9-11 days (already have eggs in the Incubator) and I want bantams cuz 2 of them are about the size of 1 LF... oh if someone does have a breeding pair they want to get rid of if there not blood tested then I need them before June 17 (deadline for blood testing and poultry entry forms for 4-h)

If you change your mind and want larger birds, let me know. I can sell you a production RIR breeding pair. The boy is slated for chicken stew this fall so he would be free.

I have been looking for ideas for a brooder. I would love to use a long metal water trough, but they I realized how expensive they were. Does anybody have any other ideas? Preferably cheap or not extremly expensive.
