INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

what colors of silkies do you currently breed and what colors are you wanting to start breeding?
The only colors i have now are white. Except 1 partridge chick. I ordered 3 but I received 1 partridge silkie and 2 partridge cochins. I want to get blue, black and more partridge or pretty much any colors.
the only color i am still wanting to get are some true blacks that are not splits. i have a black partridge roo i will most likely get rid of after my light partridge showgirl roos grows up. too bad you are not closer. we will also be breeding paints, and blue-black-splash. other breeds we will be breeding are cochins, and turkens. then we also have a bunch of other breeds mostly for eggs.
ours is filled with everything we "salvaged" from our old house. we have slowly been going through it but it will take a while. i doubt i will ever be able to park my car in there though. every time we clean up a little space we ether fill it with farm equipment or more chicken cages. speaking of chicken cages.... here was today's project. i made 4 of these 16"x16"x16" chicken crates to use for transporting chicks and chickens to swap meets. i will be making 4 more tomorrow.
YA I won't ever be able to get a car in the garage. I could If inreally needed to, but am okay with my car getting rained on etc. But when it isnt hot out instead of putting my dogs in a cage I will put them in the garage if I have to run to town real quick or stuff like that. Works better for me because they dont go to the bathroom in their but do in cages. But it is to hot for me to out them in their anymore so I just let them run around the house when I am gone, against my better judgement but they havent done anything bad yet. And those cage are really cool. Good jpb building them and the fake chicken is halirious, the only thing that would of benn funnier is a rubber chicken lol.I bought a cage that hold about 10 chickens, but I am sure will have to buy another or build some, because I will be taking more than 10 chickens to shows. And I think when I start going to the show in Lebanon I will hatch a bunch of chicks to take with me and hatching eggs, because you can sell chickens while you are there but you have to pay like 25 dollarsor something. But before I start thinking about that I might want to actually get my breeding program going lol. I should be able to do that next year but not this year.
this was the first cage i ever built. i figured it up and was shocked with how cheap they are to make. the chicken in the cage was just sitting on the table so i tossed it in. notice the chicken table cloth, floor mats, and hand towels, in the pic? our house is completely done out in chickens. lol

Thank you, everyone, for your thoughts and comfort over this nightmare. We moved the geese this morning, and now know it is a fox. We had another attack while during the move and saw it! I have never seen such a bold fox, they are always very shy of humans, weird...Its got me very surprised and concerned to have seen it! Everyone is now in the main coop. and the adult geese are pretty happy to be back in there. My little Paddy is pretty lonely and frightened however, I am thankful to still have him. Devastated to have lost his sisters. We have a good friend that traps, and will be planning the fox's demise this weekend. My neighbor confirmed the same thing happened to their ducks. Thankfully, Big Gee has accepted the pekin hen, and is allowing her to stay in their group. (Angel is a lil jealous however!) Once I know my babies are safe, I will look for some brown chinese to replace our Hope and Ivy. Will also be looking for a pekin drake! I have sure learned to not be over confident on knowing animal behavior after this. Sad part about it, I can't let the birds enjoy the pond anymore. If we do get a LGD, then everything may change but I am not taking any more chances with my babies.

Just candeled my eggs and 15 are developing just like they should be. It looks like 2 or 3 have blood rings.2 or 3 that havent developed at all so I assuming are quiter but won't be taking any eggs out until 10-15 days (this is only day 5). And 6 i'm not quite sure about yet but I will probably candel again on sunday and see if anybody has developed more. So far everything looks to be going great for shipped eggs. I have a couple of screwed up air sacs, but that happens with shipped eggs. The one that have blood ring have screwed up air sacs and like 2 maybe 3 others, but am hoping they will hatch fine anyways.

Awesome! Hope you have a great hatch. You never know with shipped eggs. Mice had 0% hatch and I've had 100% hatch.

glad you got everyone safe and figured out what was doing the killing! Hopefully you can get it taken care of quickly!

I have been looking for ideas for a brooder. I would love to use a long metal water trough, but they I realized how expensive they were. Does anybody have any other ideas? Preferably cheap or not extremly expensive.
To make a brooder 4' x 8' x 30" high:

Buy 2 sheets of 1/2" plywood. Rip them to 30" x 96". Screw 30" 2x4's to the edges.
Cut the 18" plywood left over into 48" lengths and screw them to the 30x96 assemblies, making a box with no top or bottom.
You will have 4 18"x48" pieces. Stack them so that the ends are 36" high.

Done.

I can easily step over the 30" height. If you are shorter/taller, adjust to suit your crotch clearance.

When you are done with it, remove the screws and store it.

You may already know this, but just in case:

Wizdumb about electric fencing.

Electric fencing works well if there is some moisture in the ground. When it is very dry and the dirt crumbles to dust, it doesn't work well.
An electric circuit is just that, a circuit. Electricity goes out one side, through the object, and back in the other side.
When you set up an electric fence, the wire is one side and a ground wire attached to a metal stake in the ground is the other wire.
When a critter touches both, it becomes the completes the circuit and allows electricity to flow from wire, though possum nose to possum foot to grass to dirt to metal stake and back into the ground lead of the fence charger. If the dirt is dry, no electricity passed into the dirt.
I had cows and an electric fence. Every time it got real dry, they would walk through the fence. I had to water the ground near the fence regularly to keep them in.
If you use the fence as your ground wire, you can avoid this problem.
If you string wire where there is no fence, do what I eventually did, string 2 strands of wire a couple of inches apart, making 1 wire the hot wire and the other the ground wire.
When the critter touches both wires, zap!
Don't be concerned about hurting the varmint. I have grabbed fence wiring and held on for a few seconds out of curiosity. Very odd feeling, but harmless

Good luck,

John
