INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I want to get some nipple water things and start them on that soon. I'm also dying to try putting a mirror in with them to get some more entertainment. (not like I'm lacking in it)

Off to bed-- night everyone!

25 for about $14, $9 if you don't mind waiting a month or so for shipping from China. They dropped the price $4 right after I ordered mine. Figures.

They work well. Even the 2-week old chicks figured them out in a couple of days and I took away their regular waterer.

They are messy if inside. For every drop that goes into the bird, several hit the ground. Outside, no problem. In the hen house, I had to put 17" flower pot trays under the waterers to catch the spillage. The birds drink the spillage from the tray, so it doesn't overflow. Also, you can't put water in the bucket that has debris (grass clippings, hay chaff, etc.) in it. The crud will get caught in the nipple and block it open, draining the bucket.

I am well pleased with how they have worked out. All my birds use the nipple waterers now.

I'd like to save the hens from the Roos. I have more work to do before I can safely get them in the coop but we work on it some everyday. I don't mind free ranging the boys at all though. I brought them all home from a friend because her husband was about to dispatch the Bantys and I was hoping to give them a better option. I just didn't realize that they were so much trouble for the hens they came with. I thought it was the full sized Roos that they used to live with doing the damage.

My little guys live in our basement until the coop is finished and the two groups have yet to meet. Even when my chicks are in the yard ive kept them in the fenced garden and the new group has been free ranging in our ravine (its what they were used to at their old house). I can get close to them only in the evenings.

Bantys should be able to fly well enough to get up into trees if you leave them out overnight. Put out some feed and water and start singing "Born Free".

Alternately, catch them and, using dog toenail clippers, snip off a strong 1/8" of the upper beak. This will take off the hook and part of the arched portion of the tip of the beak. That will make it more difficult for them to do damage to other birds. I did that to my 12 buff orpingtons to keep them from doing damage to the Wyandottes that I got from Shawna while they were sorting out the pecking order. That was a couple of weeks ago and the beaks have already grown back.

Thanks CCCC! I won't have much time tomorrow since I have to go back to work, have school chat and then finish my paper but Tuesday is my day off and I am hoping to spend some time with them. Of course, I will be changing their pine shavings tomorrow morning before work and getting them fresh water and food. I think I'm gonna have to set the waterer on a little block of wood. When I went to check them this evening, it was stock full of shavings. I knew it was only a matter of time but not this early :)
It is such a pain when they figure out that can easily kick the sawdust into the water. I have to clean out my chicks waterer 2-3 sometimes even 4 if they feel like being extra bratty that day lol.

ok so here it goes: i must make a confession. Went to the feed store cuz i really needed some feed and i decided to just buy some already bagged scratch. Saw that they still had chicks, and this was a big shipment cuz their brooder pens were full. they said this would probably be their absolute last shipment.
I DID IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! uuuggghhhh

I think your Dad bought you a nice camera so he could have beautiful photos of his precious grand-chickens. They are charmers!

Anyone have any tips about what TO do when trying to get your chicks used to you?

I was thinking about what M2H and I were talking about how all the books say don't handle them/stress them. I know that I need to but I am kind of lost on where to start.

I let one of my SFH run up my arm and run around on my shoulders during her turn in front of the camera. It seemed to like that.

CountryHen~ When mine were a few weeks old and not quite so "delicate," they began to go outside and be supervised in their chicken tractor, I would get under the tractor with them in the evening and sit at the end. As the temps cooled off as the sun started to set, they'd end up sitting all over me since I was warm! (I pretended they loved me--ha) Anyway, that helped them get more comfortable being around me-- or on me! Then I'd freak them out when I had to put them in a Rubbermaid tub to transport them back in the house for the night.
CRSelvey~ Sorry to hear about your roo problem. Your post about the adoption was hilarious-- and the photos were wonderful... Maybe not so hilarious and wonderful now. Don't they realize that you're trying to save them?! Maybe they need to watch a film to see how lucky they are. : - )

Pipd they are lil angels, they look so spoiled and contented

but NO FAIR yours don't even have an "Ugly stage"!

OK here is my updates with my newest poults, they are almost a week old now, 4 Royal Palm. Faded black bands showing on only 2 of them on the wings.

My first guinea keet to hatch:

They have a silver tint, with darker silver stripes. Parents are a white cock, and either a pearl or white hen. Very pretty light silvery color.. my silly phone camera is showing it to be more lite tan. 2 of 3 are out.I took out the first little guy when I added water, he was jumping out of the "breed box", and vaulting over the goose eggs

So he was moved in with my late hatch chick from last week, just a day older. I was worried he would injure his legs with all the jumping!
