INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Thanks so much for the links. We are going to build something like those. The first one linked is awesome. I was planning on something similar. But I was thinking of using a netting to cover the arches with some tarp over part of it. The thing I'm nervous about with using a net is the chicks can get out of it pretty easily until they get some size on them. I plan to use either irrigation tubing to make the arches or PVC piping. This tread mentions that PVC might crack over time. And our summers do get hot here.

I think I might have found another chicken person from Martinsville willing to come out to our place. I'm so thrilled. Now I need to find the bags and start stocking up on ice.

Another question, how much space do I need in the coop per bird to raise meat roosters not the 8 week meat birds?
You're welcome! very good point on PVC, I am planning using the livestock panels for my tractors. I think it will depend on your predators and livestock guardians, what additional netting to use. I plan to put all chick tractors inside my alpaca pasture. Nothing goes near the boys and my geese are ferocious hateful attack birds

. I am going with deer netting, and covering with heavy tarps like semi's use. Another good covering I heard about... You know the billboards that they use a "wrap" on instead of painting? They will sell off/give away the old ones... I am looking into that now too.
Fantastic news that you found someone!!!!!! If they don't mind, be sure to share their contact info!!

Rule of thumb is 1 to 1-1/2 square feet per adult bird. Start with a 1/2 square foot per chick. Anyone else have recommendations? This is increased if you have roosting space too, it all adds up

Thank you for the link I am going to build some of those hoop style ones this spring for all our new hatch and breeding roos. I am not sure about meat birds but hens is 4 sq feet per bird

Billboard wraps, I had not thought of that. If you find a good deal on it, please post the info. I'm sure the makers must have rejects sometimes. Maybe printer errors or nonpaying customers. And if the ones that come off of the billboards are in good condition, then it is a great way to recycle. And if you can get them for little to nothing, I'm all for it.

I wanted to add that I did find an online site selling the used billboards. They are large. If they can be cut and still last it looks like a great deal.

Yes, I have a single golden laced polish. I had a rooster as well, however he became aggressive towards humans, so he went to freezer camp. So I'm down to just the single hen.
I had the same problem with my gl polish cock. He was hatched in my basement and handled from day one, but I have scars from his attacks before he went to chicken hell. My whites and bantams are really docile and friendly.

Same here, raised from day old chicks. I also had 2 white crested blacks. One didnt make it the first night I got them, and the other turned out to be a great rooster. Unfortunately he decided to play on the road and got hit by a car. I also had 2 naked neck roos who were just very "active" with the hens. So they became dinner. Once I was down to the one rooster (gl polish), I think it went to his head. I tried to reminded him who was head cock, but after putting him In His place it wasn't 5 mins later he would try to sneak attack when your back was turned. So now I just have my hens, but will be adding another rooster or two this spring. Me is coming from Meyer this march and plan on trying to hatch some eggs.

I have 2 female khaki Campbell ducks that I'd like to rehome. They are hatchery birds thatipicked up last spring from local farm store. They lay eggs practically daily. Only reason I want to get rid of them is they are really making a mess in the coop (big surprise huh! Lol). It wasn't bad until the cold weather and snow arrived. Now they don't want to free range as much. They are free and pick up is outside of Warren, IN.
