INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

If your husband is looking for more pallets, I saw some very nice looking ones on North Main Street at the paint store just the other night. They were sitting next to the dumpster, so I'm pretty sure they were discarding them.
Thanks for thinking of us! A couple of months ago, it seemed like everyone on the Thread was making things out of pallets. We currently have four pallets in our garage even though we're actually trying to get rid of stuff instead of making new things! After reading Old Salt's post the other day, it sounds like pallets are more hassle that they're worth. On the other hand, when I Google Image "Things to make from pallets" I get inspired to maybe try a project (even though like everyone else, I have many projects going on at the moment!)

"Everything you ever wanted to know about Pallet Wood."
I ran across this article that has good info about pesticides and bacteria on pallets, which some members expressed concerns about. The funkyjunkinteriors site is interesting, too.

I sent the owners of BYC an email asking them about upgrading to a responsive web design (RWD) that allows their site to automatically adjust for optimal viewing when using different types of devices from desktop monitors to tablets and mobile phones. It's quickly becoming the "norm" since consumers are easily annoyed when having to change between "desktop" and "mobile" and still encounter inconsistencies in format as well as other user glitches.

I was disappointed not to receive a response.

ok, most of the final decisions are made for coop 1.0. If everyone can stay healthy for the next 48 hours, build and placement will take place on Tuesday ( fingers are crossed)

so now more possibly stupid questions

I want to do deep litter, can I mix some of the sevin dust into it to keep pest insects out? I think this sounds something like what John did by rubbing it on
the birds

Also tyring to rememebr who had pics of the rainwater runoff system, I wanted to know if I can use that Idea

thanks
I am using some 10 year old hay my daughter had in an old barn at her new house. As it gets dirty, I just sprinkle some more on top of the dirty.

When I notice flies and gnats, I sprinkle some Sevin dust around the room. Doesn't seem to hurt the chickens. Does seem to hurt the bugs.

Hi Everyone!
This is my first post here, so I hope I'm doing it in the right place?

I'm from NW Indiana, and looking to get a coop with 4-6 chickens in my back yard. I've literally just begun my research, so it will be awhile before it happens. I just wanted to connect with other chicken owners to touch base with.

After some googling, I can tell that I need chickens that will hold up to this crazy weather we have around here. Any recommendations? Also, can anyone local to me tell me WHERE I can buy them? I didn't really want to order them through the mail (when we get to that point).

One last question for the night....I'm not sure if I would be able to start with baby chicks. I would like to, but I'm a nurse, and I work 2, 12 hour shifts a week. From what I'm reading, you can't leave the babies unattended for that long. What would be a good age for me to get them at? I have 3 young kids (9, 7, and 5) so I want to get them young enough that they would be friendly with the kids.

TIA for the tips and advice!
New chicks will be fine by themselves for your 12 hour shifts. Fill their feeder and waterer before you leave and check/fill it when you get back. They pretty much take care of themselves.

There are many members that can supply you with chicks. Pick several breeds you think you might like and ask if anyone near you has them for sale. They will contact you.

For breed qualities, click the tab at the top of this page marked "Breeds".

Welcome to the thread. Glad you joined us.

It is great to hear you want to research before taking some chickens on. Lots of people get chickens first and ask questions later.

There is a wealth of information on the 'coop build' pages. Although building a coop is a basic design we do seem to over think it and become overwhelmed with all the possibilities and options. When it comes time to build ask lots of questions. Several people on here have lots of build experience and can give you basic dos, don'ts and you really shoulds. We can off you support from planning to the built to move in day.
First bit of advice for the build. Bigger is always better... Just in case.

Have a good look around for breeds you might like to own. As you seem to only want a few having different breeds in there makes it fun. Mother 2 Hens has a small flock of 7. All of them different and all of them stunning.
What is your primary reason for chickens. Do you want eggs, meat or do you just want the chickens for fun? Chickens come in two sizes. Bantams and Large Fowl. This might help you decide on breeds.

Alot of members here can offer you some great breeds. If a breed you are after is a further drive than you would like. Generally most will offer a midway meeting. Brad will be offering a 'chicken run' Friday for the members while he travels. So there are always options later down the road. People travelling for work, road trips or just making the rounds.

Make sure you stay updated on the thread. A weekend away can leave you reading through pages. Who knew there there would be so much to talk about with chickens :D

Buckeye !!!! They have Peacombs, and are the friendliest chicks I've ever seen. Mine are out in any temps don't seem fazzed at at.

Hi Morganalefey!
I am in porter county and the zoning folks at the portage city hall told me chickens are ok in all of porter county. doesn't matter if you are zoned ag or not, and you don't need a coop inspection. You will need to check if you live in a home owner association because they may have rules against them. Good luck.

Thats all I can help with since I only got my first chicks in May
