I know I have at least 7 chicks now, but I think there are more I just can't count them lol. They won't hold still!

well here goes my day since the last post. for those who don't care here is the short version.
raccoon? killed 2 chicks and injured one keet. i become a criminal that cant even turn himself for his crime.![]()
now for the long story for those few who don't have anything better to do than to read a long post on here like me.![]()
with my first loss under my belt due to a predator i have been on high alert. i ran up and bought a trap and bait so can catch this raccoon. well with facebook word quickly got out of my loss. local pet rescuers informed me how horrible i would be if i killed it. sadly these are people i do consider friends even if i don't always agree with them. they are telling me to catch it and take it to the state forest and release it. well we will see. i called dnr to find out my options. it is basically like this. i can "dispose" of the animal myself or i can release it onto someone else's property within my county as long as i have the property owners permission. i could not legally release it in a park or state forest. i offered to deliver it to any of the rescuers homes and release it there but sadly not a single one was interested in saving this poor raccoons life. go figure. yet i am the bad guy.
anyway. the keet. as chicken owners we all know chicks/birds will pick at another birds injuries because of the red. well the keet has a small chunk that was taken out of its wing along with missing a few feathers. so i bought some antiseptic spray to treat the keet with. now i choose blu-kote because that would cover the red area so the other chicks/keets will not mess with it. BUT if i use this spray i WILL be breaking the law. what law you ask? this one.

well with the mood i am in.... i treated the keet. i have a blue finger to prove it. (that spray stains really good). anyway i am ow a criminal. since the animal rights people already jumped on my case i let them know this. i gave them all of these details. but since they had already aggravated me on top of the already bad day i was having i just didn't feel like waiting. so what do i do? well i call the prosecutors office and tell them i broke a state law and was ready to plead guilty to my horrible crime and turn myself in. the investigating officer at the prosecutors office was having a very hard time trying to contain his emotions. after listening to me lay the case out for him seeing i am a horrible person for discoloring this poor innocent keet against its will while it screamed and screamed while i sprayed it down with the antiseptic spray. for some reason he informed me (while trying to contain his amusement) that they were not interested in trying to convict me on this even though i was willing to plead guilty to this case of obvious animal abuse. no matter how hard i try i always fail at being a bad ***. ohh well back to being the old softy that i have always been.
for some odd reason the extremest animal rescuers have yet to make a single comment on this. me i just feel the law is way to vague with how it is written. and yes i do understand why the law is there.![]()
we had our first predator attack last night. is anyone has the link to the predator id chart please paste that to me i forgot to bookmark it. we lost 2 chicks from our aviary last night. looks like the attack happened while the chicks were standing/sleeping next to the fencing. (1" vinyl coated poultry wire with 2"x3" vinyl coated welded wire over top. one chick (white silkie) was still in the enclosure missing a leg (no longer living), one chick (silkie-maran mix) was pulled through the wire and looks to me mostly eaten right there. just bites ad pieces left but it helped id which chick it was. and we have one guinea (still alive and doing well) with a hole in its side. none of the wire not even the poultry wire was broke. but you can see some wire bent where the attacks took place. well its war time. i hope to take care of this before we loose any more chicks. *fired up*

The comment about the paint drops sounds like something my Dad would have said. He died five years ago and tomorrow is Father's Day. Boo Hoo. Now you made me all sad. I will have to make some vanilla vodka.
Fred wouldn't work since I have pullets. And no, she doesn't look like a Fredricka. You know how they look.
Btw, my husband brought two pallets home (I've mentioned all of the pallet users on the thread, but I'm not sure what he thinks I'm going to make), and I printed out your directions/recommendations (like it's not worth the trouble, basically!)

Thanks! I looked up Addeline and learned that it's an English name that means Noble. It is my favorite suggestion so far . . . we'll see what my family members find wrong with it. Since my Jubilee has so many spots, she should Add-a-line don't you think? Sorry, that was pretty bad. : - 0
I loved the post that someone made recently-- maybe Country Hen? It was about her husband naming the chickens, but she said she would be changing all the names. It was hilarious the way she described it.
Not me but I was laughing my butt off while reading itSo today my DH comes home from the golf course and tells me he knows I posted our conversation yesterday. He heard about it from his brother, who heard it from his wife. Now that makes me wonder, who here knows my sister in law?![]()
Love it!She must've heard it at a "Hen Party"!
Awesome hen saddle! I hope it helps her heal, poor thing
I'm not sure if the pic is uploading or not but I made my first hen saddles tonight. I made one without wings but my hen is just a mess. She's lived with us for about two weeks and her wings are worse, not better so I had to try. Once I got it on her I realized that I could add wings pretty easy, so here is attempt #2. Is it close to how it should look?
I wish roosters could read-- we could make some really threatening signs...if onlyCRSelvey~ Pretty Pink Pinafore! Look at Google Image "Chicken Saddle Pattern" just to see different styles although yours looks great. I think this one with "Predators Eyes" is a good idea! What about one with a message for the Rooster: "Warning: Roosters who Rape end up in Freezer Prison!" I guess that might work if they could read.
Old Salt~ Thanks-- I was afraid "Hen Party" was an outdated term, but I've heard that Bachelorette Parties are often called Hen Parties.
Btw, I mentioned my Dad on an earlier post-- and coincidentally, he often jokingly referred to himself as an "Old Salt" because he had a sailboat and was as crazy about
sailing and we are about chickens.
So sorry Sally! I love owls but I don't like it when they have to prey on chickens-- I hear them frequently at our house and now that has me freaking out...I woke up today to an owl attacking my BLRW. He did not make it. We tried and tried to get him in the coop last night but he was acting as if the coop scared him. I thought he was scared of the other roo and their differences could be worked out today after a night away. So around 11 last night well after dark we gave up on getting him to go inside.
Now that the owl has killed one of our chickens will it ever go away?
Sounds like you and Brad have the same problem!Ok. I just had a single Crested Cream Legbar hatch. I don't think I am going to get anything out of the other 6 eggs unfortunately.
Soooo, does anyone near Indy have any newly hatched chicks they would like to sell? I don't want to raise one alone.
Please let me know.
Oh and here is a pic of the newbie. Have to wait until it dries out until I can tell if it is a boy or girl.

Sooo cute!!! love this
Welcome!!Hi Everyone!
This is my first post here, so I hope I'm doing it in the right place?
I'm from NW Indiana, and looking to get a coop with 4-6 chickens in my back yard. I've literally just begun my research, so it will be awhile before it happens. I just wanted to connect with other chicken owners to touch base with.
After some googling, I can tell that I need chickens that will hold up to this crazy weather we have around here. Any recommendations? Also, can anyone local to me tell me WHERE I can buy them? I didn't really want to order them through the mail (when we get to that point).
One last question for the night....I'm not sure if I would be able to start with baby chicks. I would like to, but I'm a nurse, and I work 2, 12 hour shifts a week. From what I'm reading, you can't leave the babies unattended for that long. What would be a good age for me to get them at? I have 3 young kids (9, 7, and 5) so I want to get them young enough that they would be friendly with the kids.
TIA for the tips and advice!
Good luck with that!I am guessing that I can't see the members list bc I use my phone? One day I will crawl out of the dark ages and get internet at the house so I can use the computer. That is if I can talk the 5 kids into letting me have a turn on it lol
Wow! Thanks for all the responses. I"m going to try to reply to everyone. I don't know how to use multiple quotes.
I've been checking out breeds, and to be honest, I"m pretty overwhelmed! I think I would like to get the larger birds. I would like eggs, but mostly I want them as pets, and I thought it would be a cool experience for the kids. My oldest had eggs that they hatched in her classroom last year, and she was utterly heartbroken when the farmer took his chickens back.
I checked out the coop section as well. We happen to have one of those playschool houses that they have long outgrown. I think we will use that to convert to a coop. I never would have thought about it, if not for this site!
I live in Lake CO, not Porter. But I have neighbors with chickens and horses. In fact, there is a horse ranch right behind my house, so I really hadn't even considered zoning being a problem. I live in an unincorporated area. No HOA here.
What kind of chickens do ya'll have?

Soon to be hen owners here! We're in the Indy area. Would love to find more local resources for purchasing our future hens and supplies. We're familiar with Naptown Chickens and are really looking forward to learning as much as we can about this new venture!
