INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I live back in the woods; my lane is a quarter of a mile long. There is a mailbox and paper box by the end of the lane at the road. Yet I have had people drive back here, and when I confront them, it's "I just wanted to see what was back here." Okay, folks, tell me where you live so that I can go and inspect your residence!
Once when my DH was still living, a carload of teenagers kept driving around (the drive circles the house). The next time that he heard them coming, he stood out front with shotgun in hand so that they could see him, and fired into the air as they passed. They didn't come back.

On the issue of eggs vs. chicks, I only buy from other breeders. Most don't sell chicks, as they want to see them grow out to decide who to keep to show and breed. Usually they don't sell eggs, either, unless they really have a surplus and don't plan to hatch more. I seldom buy on Ebay or BYC unless I know the breeder's reputation or it is a breed that I have had trouble finding.
I've had both good and bad luck with shipped eggs, but then I've had both good and bad luck with my own eggs and with those that I have purchased from a breeder at a show or swap. It's always a gamble.
I pretty much agree with what everyone else has said about hatching rather than buying chicks. I once ordered a shipment of chicks to raise to sell; have of them died within 2 days. The hatchery would replace them but would also send them with the same number of cockerel chicks to fill out the shipment. I took store credit instead, which I have never used.

I have a small store credit at a hatchery too. Not too sure what I will use it on as I really don't plan to order more hatchery birds.

So I stopped in my local Orschlens for feed and bedding and saw this on the bulletin board. Anyone ever participate in this? I'm thinking of doing it.

ok, I am 30 post behind, but...
My uncle lives by GArden of the Gods park in southern Ill. Thats not too far from Evansville and they have mountain lions in the park. There is no fence keeping them in, and they have rather large teriitories so there is no reason that they wouldn't be in southern Indiana if they felt like a change of pace.

People are so strange now a days. It is clear from the road that we have chickens. Well about an hour a go this unknown car pulls in stops like they are just going to turn around but then drives all the way to my back garage barn. Thankfully my children hear cars in the driveway and run to the windows expecting Grandpa. When it was not who they wanted they come and tell me mom there is someone here for YOU. When I look out there is a teenage boy and girl maybe old enough for a driving permit just walking around my yard looking at my chickens. They were nicely dressed and the car was a newer one. I did not see any boxes or crates so I don't know if they were planning on taking the chickens but I think not. I went out and asked if they were lost or needed directions. They said they just wanted to see my chickens. I nicely tried to explain an extreme bio safety approach to chicken keeping and asked them to leave since my chickens had never been exposed to their germs.
I have to wonder what the police would do if I called in and said I think someone is trying to steal a chicken from me. Maybe they were just hoping for eggs, either way I did not like it. I would have gladly showed them the chickens if they would have knocked and asked.
Thats weird who just walks around your yard without asking.I love bragging about my chickens and showing them to people, but if some stranger was walking around my yard without permission I would not be a happy camper. And long story short I bet they wouldnt like me in the end because I would call the cops. that just my opinion.

Don't bend to idiocy. It only encourages the idiots.

John
I agree! Don't encourage idiots.

The nerve of some people. What your DH did sounds like a good way to take care of things to me.

Today was a good coop building day. We decided to stop for a short time to make a sand box for our kids and it turns out that it was a great decision. Now they can play while I'm working on the coop and still see everyone. The inside of the nesting box is finished now and while its not exactly the right size, I think the little extra space might be useful for storage. We just didn't know what we were planning for the inside when the outside was started. Either way, I think its pretty good now. Wouldn't that look better with curtains? I think I'm teasing, but just in case I'm not, please don't tell my dh...;-)
