INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Here one for you. I like hatching so I sell the extra chicks on Craigslist very cheap too compared to the other listings. Well today I get a call asking for chicks that will lay eggs. I nicely explain that production reds lay about 5 eggs a week but that I do no sell sexed chicks as I do not have that skill. Then they get all upset saying that I should not be allowed to sell a boy chick, I should give those away for free. Then they went on to say if I thought half of the chicks were boys I should only get paid for half of the chicks they picked out. Needless to say, but they are not picking up chicks today.
Right now I'm asking $3 or 2 / $5 for chick, but most of the other chicks in the area are $4 or higher and they are not sexed either. I suppose I could raise my prices and then put in a half off for straight run and only offer straight run. Seems silly though.

Everyone want something for nothing. Do you think they go into TSC and ask for half off their unsexed chicks? heck even buying their sexed chicks you could still end up with roosters.
People are idiots. Hard to stay away from them though.

Do you only have RIR's right now?

Rhodebars and Crested Cream Legbars.  I know you've had some by what I've read on here.  But wasn't sure if you had hatching eggs available for them yet....

Yea mine aren't old enough. The legbar eggs I got from Wisconsin were from the seller targander01 on EBay. I won the auction for 6+ eggs for $26.98 shipped with all 7 eggs developing. I've also bought eggs from trey22250 on eBay and very apply with them. He is from southern Indiana and occasionally has legbar up on eBay. I haven't received them yet but will let you now how the rhodebar eggs do from Pennsylvania.

I would much rather buy the eggs local (Indiana) or from a nearby state.  Too much can happen when they are in transit with the USPS for very long.  But when you can't find what you're looking for close by, you are kinda out of luck.  Where in Wisconsin did you get your legbar eggs?  If you don't mind posting, how reasonable were they with shipping?

Wow you are up earlier than I am today. Aren't you retired? My dad says he can't sleep in, in the morning. I tell him that if he wouldn't go to bed at 7, he'd be able to sleep in better. 7 plus 8 hours sleep equals 3 AM.

Anyway, they hatch the eggs so the baby chicks can have tinfoil on their heads from day one. No moonbeams in their little heads.
Went to bed at 2 AM. Woke up at 5 AM. Monkeyed around til 6:30. Went back to bed. Woke up at 11:30.

Don't bend to idiocy. It only encourages the idiots.

anyone have links to some great exterior nesting boxes. I'm debating on using them in my next coop. The one that We have not started to build but keep talking and talking about. We even gathered some wood but it is hot here. I'm thinking September / October will be building months.

I ran across chicken coop names threads. Curious, have any of you named your chicken coop? A friend named ours Steele Cocks...I made it a little more kid friendly with Steele Cockerels!

I looked at hatching eggs when I got interested in getting chickens, but the hatching eggs were about the same price as live chicks.

By the time I added the cost of the incubator, hatch rates, prospect of shipping damage, and all the things that can go wrong, I couldn't make any sense of it. So I bought (too many) chicks.

Can someone explain to me why they hatch eggs rather than buy day-old chicks? Other than the obvious "Just Like Doing It"?

John
One some of the breeds I get hatching eggs are cheaper. And I also like hatching them. You get to see them hatch and you get to raise them from when they hatch verses when you get them a few days old.In the end hatching is cheaper for me.I can spend $100 on chicks and $100 on hatching eggs and most likley end up with more chicks.Exspecially when you buy chicks from breeders instead of hatcherys it is usually cheaper just to buy eggs from them. And if I have a bad hatch I lose a little money, but I learn from it.

People are so strange now a days. It is clear from the road that we have chickens. Well about an hour a go this unknown car pulls in stops like they are just going to turn around but then drives all the way to my back garage barn. Thankfully my children hear cars in the driveway and run to the windows expecting Grandpa. When it was not who they wanted they come and tell me mom there is someone here for YOU. When I look out there is a teenage boy and girl maybe old enough for a driving permit just walking around my yard looking at my chickens. They were nicely dressed and the car was a newer one. I did not see any boxes or crates so I don't know if they were planning on taking the chickens but I think not. I went out and asked if they were lost or needed directions. They said they just wanted to see my chickens. I nicely tried to explain an extreme bio safety approach to chicken keeping and asked them to leave since my chickens had never been exposed to their germs.
I have to wonder what the police would do if I called in and said I think someone is trying to steal a chicken from me. Maybe they were just hoping for eggs, either way I did not like it. I would have gladly showed them the chickens if they would have knocked and asked.
