INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Thanks for all of the warm welcomes!  I can't believe how fast this Indiana thread moves....holy cow!  My last post was 24 hours ago and now its several pages back LOL.

Anyone have any advice on having hatching eggs shipped in the summer?  This heat makes me think I should wait until October or so before I order them.  Especially if I order them from clear across the country.  (from papabrooder)
I've recently had eggs shipped from a state or two away (tolbunt from Michigan, and leg bars from Wisconsin) and both arrived intact. Just candled and all 7 legbar are developing and 8 or the 9 tolbunt are developing. I've had the best luck having eggs shipped no more than 2 states away. I've ordered from papa brooder a couple times and haven't had gret success. He dd a great job packing, but I think the distance and USPS did them in. What breeds are you looking for?

If you have been having chickens killed, check out what it might have been.

Oh that makes me sick. Leopards are such beautiful wild animals and it should be against the law for people to own "exotic" animals. So irresponsible, my eyes are tearing up.

I am having pretty good luck so far, do let the eggs stand 12 hours and candle to check for detached air cells. When I do set them, I put them in a egg crate thats ventilated, and do not turn a few days to allow the air cells to reattach. it usually does work! Good luck

Quote: I know, me too, The worst part of the story is the fact the guy with the sanctuary was right there and could have cared for that beautiful cat, the owner obviously couldn't. He seemed heartbroken too and its sure not the cats fault. It was a living thing someone had as a status symbol. They should be found and persecuted.

WOW that could have been horribly dangerous for a child to stumble on! Sad the animal died, but very dangerous situation.
I admit I did not read the attached link but I read about this. It was an interview of a man that runs a rescue I believe. But he said a woman had called him numerous times stating she seen a leopard in her yard and was scared. She wanted hom to set lives traps on her property so he could catch it and take it to his rescue. He said in his interview he never believed the lady and would kinda chuckle at her and done nothing. He now wishes he had. I don't believe he's at fault but di believe she should have checked it out. We have had reports of big cats around here. Mtn lions to be exact. My neighbor swore he watched 1 walk down a small drive behind his house a couple years ago. I thought I seen one in our field after a deer. It didn't look to be full grown and failed at catching the deer. I felt like I was loosing my mind. I was trying to come up with something else it could be but couldn't come up with anything. And just a few weeks ago I heard that a black panther attacked and killed3 coons in a mans yard in Williams. There is suppose to be a video but I've not seen it.

Quote: several years ago when I worked in Animal control, I assisted with a cougar that was an escaped pet. It had already attacked a man walking his dog, It didn't end well, a DNR officer was attacked & bitten during the attempt to contain it.. The owner was found and heavily prosecuted.
I wonder if the woman had reported the sightings to the police, or just the guy from the sanctuary.

I also had the same expereince with eggs from papabrooder. He packed them great included 3 extras, one was broken.Out of 8 eggs 1 hatched.USPS didnt so very well handeling them.

I looked at hatching eggs when I got interested in getting chickens, but the hatching eggs were about the same price as live chicks.

By the time I added the cost of the incubator, hatch rates, prospect of shipping damage, and all the things that can go wrong, I couldn't make any sense of it. So I bought (too many) chicks.

Can someone explain to me why they hatch eggs rather than buy day-old chicks? Other than the obvious "Just Like Doing It"?

Large carnivores that are escaped pets are extraordinarily dangerous animals. They have no fear of humans and will attack much more readily. This is also true of buck deer. Children are especially vulnerable.

People who raise dangerous animals should be held strictly liable for damage done when they escape.
