INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hey all! New here to the forum. I'm 40 years old and have had chickens since I was 10. Showed chickens, geese and turkeys 10 years in 4-H, and now my girls show chickens in 4-H. We have FBC Marans, Barred Rocks, Americaunas, Buff and Black Cochins, Wyandotte bantams, Old English, Buff Orps, Brahmas, Brown Leghorns and a few mixed barnyard birds we hatched and couldn't part with :) Excited to be a new member. Lots to see here! Been wanting to find some Cream Legbar and Rhodebar hatching eggs locally (Indiana). Anyone have any leads on either from decent stock? Thanks, Dave
Welcome, You aren't to far from me, !!!

Welcome to the forum.  I think you'll enjoy the camaraderie on here.  Sounds like you have a great flock.   Not sure about Rhodebars, I've seen some listed on Indy Craigslist, but don't have any.  As far as Cream Legbars, there are a few of us starting up flocks and hope to have some eggs later, but I'm not aware of any local Indiana sources for good stock hatching eggs right now.  I got my first from a member on here who is in Northern Indiana, but she had a raccoon attack and lost her laying hens, so she is in the process of rebuilding her flock too.  If you do find a source, please let us know, and we will do the same.
i just have a pair of leg bars and a pair of Rhodebars that are 14-15 weeks old. I also have a week old cockerel rhodebar. I did order 6 legbar eggs from someone in PA last week off eBay. I received 7 eggs all intact and all growing. I also have a dozen rhodebar eggs coming this week from TN and more in the next week or so from FL (I swapped these eggs late winter and they are now just getting ready to ship. We'll see what the heat does during shipping). So hopefully next spring ill be all set to go.

*that special place in hell for a person who drops off one chick and steals another when nobody is home.* just venting. cant talk about it at this time though. charges are pending.

on the bright side i did get the raccoon last week.

ohh the stress.. calgone take me away!

Thanks! I did know about not trying to peel the freshest eggs.

But, wait a minute. You don't eat any eggs? What are your chickens for, friends? Or do you show them? They have been having some cracked corn lately. We get crickets sometimes also.

My chickens are far from being show birds. They are just my buddies... :D
I am that crazy cat lady.

I do sell eggs as fast as the girls produce them, so getting more seemed like a good choice. The funds I make on the eggs pays for a big chunk of their food. The family still eat eggs and I cook with them often.

All in all, I enjoy the humor of watching them, torment them by feeding them berries and seeing who is the faster to run with it. I love the feeling of collecting eggs and providing for the family everyday from my girls who enjoy being there.

Sure if you want. The good incubator with turner holds 41 chicken / small to average duck eggs. There is a 42nd spot but that egg would need to be a small to med chicken egg.
I hope you find what you need. I have some chicks but you are about 2 hours from me.

Is there anyone here that would like a RIR hen for free? She was laying eggs before and right after she sprained her leg. But She has not laid for 3 days now. I can't really keep providing her a recovery place but if anyone wanted a special needs hen, I would be glad to give her to you.

Think DH would kick my butt.. but I have been contemplating it. Feeling a little soft spot for the bantam Cochins. They are adorable.
Been 'window' shopping for eggs, seeing what is out there. Oh geez.. some of the more exotic looking birds like the Am gold pheasant... holy moly, who would not want some of those in their collection?
I did see some rather great looking Silkies on ebay and some in the BST section on here. I am trying to resist... but some of those blue Silkies... melting my heart.

Oh my goodness so tiny! They are the hardest to hatch of the duck family. and not a "true" duck, a cousin of the species. 35 days to hatch, so I usually don't set them. I mistook a scovy egg for a pekin i guess

I had left the egg in because I could see movement and thought I marked the wrong date. This is a good reason to date eggs meant for hatching! Otherwise, this baby would not be here.
I have 3 bourbon red poults and am leaving the remaining eggs another day, but is not looking like I will see more hatch. Hard lesson learned! I was just heartbroken over the power outage.
I had another that had pipped, but it appears to have stopped moving. I wont open the hatcher till we are at 5 days, except to add sponges. I will take the pipped egg out tomorrow and see if the poult is still alive. By then, it will need help to hatch if it is still alive. DH is insisting on a sportsman cabinet and a bigger battery backup. I am gonna cave in yet! Told him to figure out the power stuff. I am clueless on electric, I can use saws, hammers and put fence up. I guess I better learn wiring too!

Bravo... Muscovy are some rather good lucking ducks.

I did see an incubator on Craiglist for $500 Holds 200 eggs :D

I am in need of a chick. Only one of my columbian rocks hatched on saturday and now she needs a friend. So if anyone has anything LF near randolph county please pm me. Thanks.

Quote: I have good luck with my chickens' eggs but they are production RIR. I have never tried to hatch a silkie. They have different kinds of skulls and it is very hard to get them past day 18 from what I have read. Also shipped eggs are another challenge. Something to consider. I ordered duck eggs on ebay and out of 8 only 3 will be going into lockdown. They were the only 3 to start the other eggs were basically scrambled. I also am trying some shipped sumatra eggs. Of those at least a 1/3 were messed up by shipping. The packaging was great just traveling in the mail is hard on eggs.
And lastly now is not the best time of year to be shipping eggs to or from our area. It can get too hot, the packages don't get to sit in air conditioning for the entire trip sadly.

All of that said, I will gladly fill up my incubator with any eggs you want. You can even come over to candle too. I try to candle close to day 10 and day 18.

Thanks! I am worried for the chicks she may hatch, but Bunny is a feisty girl. She will peck the roos in a flash and she is really picky about her roo! She is head over heels in love with Rebel (australorp roo) and follows him everywhere. Glad its her and not my BR, or the wyandottes. Both of those are pretty laid back hens and I think they won't protect the chicks as well as Bunny.
Sounds like she will be a great mom.And congrats on your muscovy duckling!
