INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hi everyone, just got power back after losing it from a storm Monday. My ee is pretty much the same. I started her on vitamin b complex, calcium with D and polyvosol. I am thinking its mericks. I have a BA whose eyes are funny looking. Almost like his iris is bleeding into the color part of her eye. All I can do is treat and cull. If culling is needed, where do I send her for a necro? Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks!

Deb

Where do you get your chickens NPIP tested or certified(not sure what it is called)? Within the next year depending on how much it cost I would like to get my chickens tested. Thanks

Send to the Purdue amimal diagnostic lab in West Lafayetter. If not too far a drive for you, you can take her there--they'll even do the euthanising; otherwise get a cool pack from Fed Ex--don't tell them what you're shipping, and ship the body overnight. The diagnostics are free, paid for by the Indiana Poultry Association. If it is Marek's, then all your birds are exposed; they may not develop the disease but will be carriers for the virus. It's deadly and highly contagious. They then shouldn't be sold or exposed to other birds, and any new ones that you bring in should be vaccinated.
It's better to know than just to hope. Good luck!

This evening, I was working on re-doing the landscaping in the front of our house and my five hens were helping me as usual. A couple of women out for an evening walk, stopped and one said, "Are those REAL?" (no, they're robots?) I explained that they were pets with benefits-- eggs. Then she said, "Is that big black one the rooster? I explained that it wasn't; it's a Jersey Giant. "Oh, it's BIG!" (yes, that's what giant means). "How do you get eggs if you don't have a rooster?" "Do the eggs taste okay?" Geez. Maybe I was a little testy because of the heat and humidity.

When I teach Lifespan Development at Ivy Tech, I offer a bonus question: "Can a hen produce identical twins? Why or why not?" I get answers such as, "Yes, I've seen double yolks, two white spots, or whatever." I bring in some eggs to break and show fertility and explain why an egg can't divide into two. We can't look at human zygotes first hand, but we can chickens!

I have been amazed how many people that have asked me that "How do you get eggs if you don't have a rooster?" question since they found out that we're going to keep chickens. I've been using a quote that I think I stole from someone on here to explain, "Just like how a woman produces an egg each month a hen produces one every 24-36 hours." Then they often ask if we plan to hatch any of the unfertilized eggs... :hmm
