INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have always been very pleased with Orschelns! I buy most of my feed there as well. They have great a great selection of chicks in the spring as well.
They have a great selection of chicks because the girl who does their buying has her own flock. Apparently last year her boss was not entirely happy with all the breeds, etc. lol Not sure other stores would have the same selection. I know a couple years back their selection was worse then TSC. It's definitely worth calling 1x/week in the spring before making the trip! Last year they had a great selection of pullets, and not all straight run, which of course, they got after I had all my chicks purchased from other stores.

Cluckacres~ when I lived around there we used a family owned mill...Oldfather Grain. It was nice b/c we could get the organic non-"messed with" grains. They would mix whatever you wanted into it. Very nice people too.

I don't think (Ted) Oldfather mixes grains anymore. I could be wrong, but last time I asked around, it seemed like a dead end. And yes, he's got the big farm on SR 114.

Ahh that makes sense. I got my naked necks and polish from there last year. I hope the selection will be just as good his year, or maybe I don't lol! They also carried the chicks a lot later than all the other farm stores around. Thankfully I'm only about 10 mins from Huntington so I end up making weekly trips in there during their "Chick Days".

I checked the website for the Greenfield Orshelns because I am always in search of a better price for my feed. I saw the 12.99 bag listed but it is only a 40lb bag. I buy the 50lb bags at Tractor Supply for 15.49 (I think). My girls have been consistent with my 3 reds laying daily and the two Black Australorps have both laid each of the past 3 days, too. One of those had not laid for 2 months before finally laying 1 on Jan 1st. Since then, she has laid 4 times--and she has never laid 3 days in a row before! I think she made a New Year's Resolution NOT to be rehomed somewhere and to finally give me some eggs! hahaha

rural king plays "the bag weight game" some too. I have a pocket calculator and i stand in the isle figuring it up lol! wish the TSC in anderson carried an "all flock" I plan to ask next time i go there. I always keep oyster shell out so it would be a good choice for me.

I just calculated 13.00 for 40lb versus 16.00 for 50lb and they are practically the same. The 40lb bag is 32.5 cents per pound and the 50lb is 32 cents per pound. ;-)

So I have been throwing around the idea of fencing in my whole yard. I have 2 acres. Main reason for wanting to is to help prevent the chickens from wondering off property (they like to cross the road as well as visit the church next door. I was looking for opinions on the best fencing to do this. I'm thinking horse fencing that is 2x4 openings. Would 4 Feet be tall enough? I know most chickens could fly over this, But Would they? Would I be wasting my money? I also like the idea of having it all fenced in for the possibility of keeping other animals. Just looking for a good cheap way to accomplish this.

It really depends on what your future plans are. We are looking at the same thing, but only fencing in 3 acres or so. We plan to have cattle this year. Sooooo NOT paying $10 a pound for a steak! I already have the alpaca, so it would benefit them also. They only have an acre right now. My birds already free range, but it would give that extra bit of safety for them from predators (dogs). And milk goats! So for me its a no brainer. If you are thinking goats, sheep or cattle anytime in the future, its a great idea. I plan to go with the "field fence" its 330 ft, 52" high, for around 140 bucks, 2 rolls will be plenty. Our sides and back of the property are fenced already. I used it for my pigs too, just put extra posts in so it was sturdier. Going to go with T-post for now, with good heavy corners (6x6s probably) The beef farmer up the road has it on his pastures with no problems. I know alpaca aren't guard animals, don't ever let anyone say they don't spit! my comet will spit and stomp at anything he doesn't like

He hates the yellow barn cat and will promptly spit him if he comes anywhere near him!

Im still saving at Orchelens than my local feed store. At my local feed store im paying 18.00 for 40lbs layer crumble and 18.00 for cracked corn. LOL
