INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

My shipping was close to $9 but the total per egg was less than a $1 since I got 50. It sounds like a lot but I plan to use 36 for my children as painted eggs in their baskets. This the season to find them at craft stores though.

Awesome! I just started a total of 13 GLW eggs in my first ever hatch, toooo exciting!!!

Hello from Evansville's Northside! I just happened to run across this thread and am happy to connect with fellow Hoosiers. We are first time chicken owners (since March 2012) and are lucky to have five hens. I have always been a cat person, but I quickly turned into a crazy chicken lady. Chickens are so entertaining! You can see more info on my profile. I will have to catch up reading everyone's posts.

Welcome & glad you joined us. So glad we are getting more chicken lovers from the Evansville area. You have a nice variety of hens.

So being cheap and wanting to get rid of heat lamps if possible, I've been looking into the EcoGlow by brinsea. I just couldn't get over the "high" price and decided to make my own. I have reptiles as well, so use FlexWatt quite often. I had some extra laying around and will be attaching it to a board (thinking corrugated plastic like yard sale signs are made from). I made the stand out of CPVC. I will have around $10-$15 total to make it. Here is a picture of the stand. So far none of it is glued together. I got out the dremel tool and ground down the inside of the "T" so I can raise and lower the FlexWatt. I will drill some holes along the legs so I can put a pin in to hold the platform at the desired height. I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Looking great! I love my Ecoglow and was lucky to buy it on sale and I found a coupon code too. Don't think I would have paid full price.

Got the heater wired up and attached. Hobby Lobby didnt have the plastic board I really wanted, so i picked up a thick foam board. Will be taping the edges to prevent them from pecking and eating the foam. I will attach the foam to the sand with zip ties. I still need to drill for the pegs so I can adjust the height. I plugged it in and put 2 thermometers midway between the FlexWatt and floor and it measured 95f! I couldn't believe it. I will try it again tomorrow and let it run all day to make sure. I also had to offset one of the rails so it would sit flush on the stand due to the wire connectors.

Thank you to christybmom for the advice about worms/pests! I have occasionally put a little apple cider vinegar in their water after reading about it, but I've used Heinz brand that I happened to have. Does it have to be organic to work? I can won't hesitate to use seven dust 2x if needed. I also checked out the poop examples, and everything looks ok! Thanks for your advice, and if anyone else has any health maintenance tips, please share.
