Does everyone here hatch their eggs in incubators? Does anyone let mama hen hatch them? I am curious as to the hatch rate between the two methods. Anyone know?
We had a broody do a wonderful job last spring -- she hatched 6 out of the 6 fertile eggs she had, which is much better than I've ever done with an incubator. I'm hoping she goes broody again this year, too. We had another consistently broody hen that I let set last fall. That time I stupidly bought expensive hatching eggs to put under her. She ate 3 eggs and then just left the rest on the last 3 days. Fortunately, I was able to put them in the incubator and one hatched. That's how we ended up with "35" -- the $35 wonder chick. lol
So, to answer your question, it definitely depends on the quality of the eggs and the hen.
