INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Some slighty off topic news.. One of my wee chicks passed away today. Not sure what happened, he seemed fine yesterday, today, not looking so good. I shake my fist at myself for being sooo excited at the new tsc chicks... Should have waited.. darn me.

So perhaps all this brooder talk might be an option for us sometime. We talked about getting one and just hatching some ourselves... This way we know from day one, what is happening.

I'm sorry to hear about your chick. Being prey creatures, avians generally won't show that they're sick until it's often too late. It's so disheartening to lose one.

The reptile section of a pet store has thermometers and hygrometers that I have used in incubators with good results. Just choose ome that is registering the same as most of the others.

Ah ha... Well just to let you know, both my husband and I are in the construction trade and often remove and dispose of cabinets. Both kitchen and bathroom vanities... I always have acess to such items. I am more than happy to hang on to something if someone is after a certain items.

I was in the construction trade as well. I love construction work. My wife says I collect too much stuff. But like the saying goes "one mans junk is another mans treasure" . Just about anything i build or make is mostly from recycled wood and materials. I love to re-purpose if you cant tell. I am currently building a new coop out of wooden pallets i picked up for free. I am using a bathroom vanity right now as a brooder. I just open the front doors and can take care of the chicks. Plus I have a lid covered with chicken wire as the top lid.

There could be a number of reasons why the little chick passed away. It could of been the smallest, weakest and was being bullied around the food and water dish. It also could of got sufficated by the others laying on top of it. Could of got trampled on as well. So many factors. I am really sorry you lost one tho! In my last hatch I lost 3.

Just made a egg turner. It will be an automatic egg turner but dont have the motor yet so I will just move it manually. Even manually it will sure be easier to turn the eggs then just turning each egg its self. Plus it will save time so the lid isn't open for so long. Here is a pic of it so far.

I'm sitting here typing with one hand. holding a baby polish in the other hand and my Maine coon cat on my lap. The poor chick hatched 3 days ago with its head tilted backward so it can't balance itself. I expected it to die right away so just tried to make it comfortable. It was still going strong yesterday, so I tried making neck brace. That was failure. Today I made gruel with chick starter and am feeding with a syringe. I hope I'm doing the right thing--most breeders tell me that defective chicks should be put down, but I consider all life sacred. If a chicken is suffering, that's another story, but this little thing is so active that I want to give it a chance.
