I'll give that a try. Some small mealworms, tho. After seeing how excited they got when the fly got caught in their brooder, a few mealworms would only live a few seconds lol.

There is a fishing tackle store not far from where I live. I buy crickets by the 'tube'. Works out around 100 large crickets for $3.50. Much cheaper than the pet stores ($1.50 a dozen).
They do sell them in different sizes, can not wait to get the chicks their first live food.
My big girls run around like hooligans after them in their pen, ruffling the straw around trying to find them. Much fun... Who needs T.V for entertainment?

I am currently on the East side, going to let you know I have some scrap lumber available if you need it. Had some listed on Craigslist and people have picked through some of the bigger pieces. I think all the pallets may be gone by now too, although I may have some damaged ones of those left, I can let you know later on.
I know there are still a few 2x2 cedar, which I am going to be using to make a small tractor from. I will try and take some pictures for you while I am there, just in case there might be something you need.

I've been contemplating the mealworms as well, sounds pretty well, easy. Too easy to pass up basically free protein. Seems a great way to get them to scratch through their straw in the coop too, toss a handful in and watch them clear the floor!
Fantastic idea about freezing them and saving them for the winter months.
I've got a red wiggler worm bin going, but I need to order probably 2-3 lbs worth and let em sit for a fe months befoore there's actually enough to feed everyday, now it's just a few worms a piece for a "treat".
And question, I 'll look elsewhere on here for a thread on this, but I noticed one of my EE's eggs is a lil odd. The eggs themselves are rather large, beautiful orangey yolks, nice hard shell, but there's like a ring of extra calcium about a 1/3rd of the way down from the pointy end. I'll try a pic, but from my phone, uploading hasn't been working well.
They've been getting their layer pellets, small amounts of corn, and usually every other day or so I toss a head of lettuce or cabbage in there. Also brocolli, strawberrys, a few worms, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary from what I've been giving them that last few months

I too occationally have had rings around the eggs, or two tone coloured eggs normally half way down. Next batch of eggs they seem fine.
Currnetly dealing with a few 'warty' eggs too. Insides are fine, they just do not look pretty. I think most of the shell issues are all calcium based.
Currnetly removing my osyter shell feed from the copp to hopfully resolve the warty eggs.

Hmm, they are currently not getting oyster shell over here, I was holding it back as their shells were perfect, nice and thick, way harder to crack than a store bought egg. I've only noticed this twice so far, one last week, then they're fine, and one this morning.
After building our coop last year, we had to make an emergency finish on it to accommodate the two turkey rescues. Took time to build a turkey pen transferred the turkeys at which point my chicks were ready for the outdoors (or rather I was sick of the front bathroom being poop covered
) and never got round to finishing the chicken coop properly.
If the weather holds out for the weekend, as it is supposed to I am going to attempt to build a poop tray and remake the roost.
All this rain has made their straw floor soggy, which in turn has made all the poop soggy, combined is a fabulous smell
Would love to make a removable tray from the outside, but I think it might be a basic pull out tray for now.
Think I also need to come up with some awesome idea for a 'floating' floor in the coop to help with the water issues I have in there. Never really realized how much the water rose in the garden til I put the coop in.
All these things are always in hindsight right?

My RIR lays funny eggs too. They started out extra long, almost 2x. After 3 months of laying, they still are a bit odd. She lays dependably 6 days a week. And her eggs are big, she is not. But she seems fine and the eggs are too. And I have been getting warty eggs too. I just throw out oyster shell now and then. Suppose that's it. It's only on my EE's.
Also I had my Dr appt yesterday. I have a chip fracture for sure. He said I have to wear a brace and not lift or use for 6 weeks! Told him I had fences to build, coups to build!!! Anyhow I went to tJMax after. I'd been wanting some of those china egg holders like William Sonoma and other expensive store have. Tj had them . A 12 holder was 8$ and a 6 is 3. They even had them in colors. So I have them in the fridge all nice and pretty.

Well Bacon, I have tried googling for the egg issue you are having but I am coming up blank, I am sure there is something in the 'egg laying' section on BYC. If I have time later, I am more than happy to dig through a couple of threads to see what I can find. Being it's the second egg like that I'm not too worried, as the rest of the weeks eggs are fine( at least last week it was, I guess we'll see tomorrow)
I'ma poke around too, just cause I'm curious.
I'm thinkin it might be just extra protein/calcium from the fresh food they've been getting. The eggs that have been "ringed" are unusually large compared to their "normal" eggs. I'm gonna attempt a pic, the one on the right is the ringed egg, which is almost impossible to see in the picture, but it's next to a "normal" sized egg that I usually get from them.
