INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I'm way behind but I wanted to say I also have the ceramic egg cartons. I got the half dozen one at Bed Bath and Beyond (Mishawaka) in their dishes department. I also have a dozen size one on order from Amazon. Here it is: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DR4982/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I use them to keep eggs on the counter and set them in such a way that I know which are the oldest and which are the newest. (Sorry so behind!)

I've seen those pretty ceramic egg cartons in the stores, too, but aren't eggs supposed to be covered so they don't absorb odors or is that only if they've been washed before putting them in the frig?

Only if you wash them, the bloom protects the egg from anything entering it.. i bet a strong onion odor or fish might get in tho after a while.

I love how you refer to them as ''fry pan chick'' lol!

Tonight I killed a possum in my chicken house...

The kids and I were late getting home and doing the evening feed. The three of us had been in the chicken house for over 5 minutes, feeding the 2 month old chicks. I opened one of the breeder pen doors to drop off a bucket. As I shut the door I scanned the roost to check out the birds (bantam cochins in this pen) and there on the top roost were two hens on the left end and on the right, a big ol' possum.

It was sitting on the top rung just like it was a chicken. Strangest thing I have seen... I had my son go to the house for the .22
The whole time it just sat there, occasionally looking at me. I wish I could have caught and relocated it, but couldn't figure out how to get it done right then. It would be too risky to have scared it out, once it knew how to get in. I am assuming it climbed the 6 foot fence...

This was my first possum-in-the-chicken-house trouble. It was just one door and six feet away from my young birds.

I don't know if this was a first time or if it got in there every night. No birds have been missed.
''sitting on the top rung just like it was a chicken'' lol. I'd have to take it out also, glad your chickens are ok. Possums are not the smartest things I've ever seen.

I lost my Polish chick over night. So frustrating makes me want to bawl!!

Since bringing him home he has has continual pasty butt, but seemed to be thriving. Having to clean his behind 4 times a day. Although checking him this morning I see no build up, but I assume he was having some internal problems that a clean up and yoghurt was just putting a band aid on.

My last check on the chicks was around 2am before I headed to bed and they were all doing the diving airplane stretch.

Going to spend they day pouting knowing that my four remaining are looking good but might not be out of the woods yet.
So sorry about the Polish. ''doing the diving airplane stretch'' is funny. My chicks sleep like that sometimes.

Couple update pictures:

Does my outfit make me look fat? LOL.

Yesterday we added on to the pallet coop, might have some dry weather today. But it is Kyle's 8th birthday today!

And wow those chicks are growing fast, I need to keep building quickly.

This thread is WAY active.
