INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hello fellow Hoosier BYC'ers,
I have been watching this post for couple of weeks and would like to introduce myself. I am new to having chicks and started almost two weeks ago with my little chicks that I picked up a TSC for a backyard flock. I have wanted chickens for a while and finally this year I was ready for the commitment. The chickies are all doing fine and I have already upgraded to a bigger brooder box,( i know they grow fast but it seems I may have under estimated). I can definitely tell some of their distinct personalities. I have a red pullet who seems to already like heights, so I know now I will have to make some adjustments in the coop. Her brooder mates are also two leghorn pullets and two silver laced wyandottes. I have loved every second of this journey so far and I am already trying to come up with some new ideas for next season! Anyway, besides the chickies, we have a two year daughter, two dogs, a guinea pig affectionately named "Piggy," and several fish. I look forward to reading your future posts and getting to know you all!!!

First of all, thanks to all who posted information about dealing with predators including our recent invasion of flocks of large birds that I thought were hawks, but probably are vultures. Ironically, my maiden name is Geier, which means vulture in German! (pronounce Guy-er) Geier vultures are in the category of Old World vultures, which aren't found in the U.S., and I must point out that Geier vultures are much more attractive that the New World vultures found in the U.S. I've attached photos to show a couple of types of Geier vultures (in case you and your chickens ever move to Europe, Africa, or Asia where Old World vultures are found -- haha)

These are beautiful birds! We have turkey vultures in Indiana ... UGLY.

I am really hoping the goslings will hatch, I almost have their pondside enclosure completed so i will have room for the babies too. Did the batch of eggs you might have duck eggs in hatch yet? My muscovy lay an off white egg with a waxy look to them. Ducks and geese take 28 days, and I guess the muscovy can go out longer. I am reading more about them before we try to hatch.

No no duck eggs yet. Im thinking by the color of some of the eggs there might not be any ducks. Im on day 21 today.

Good morning all, Making DHs lunch and was browsing Craigslist. The poor family, I would be devastated! This not only upset me, but frightened me! My Lavenders are 3 weeks old, guess i better be installing locks on their coop!

Geez. Faith in humanity just got a hit...who steals someone's chickens?

I'm definitely re-purchasing a trail camera, after mine was stolen...aaarrgh! Spending the extra dough for the model that sends the pics to a "black box" so if the camera gets stolen you still get the pics of the theif.

I hope they get their chickens back.
