INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

When I read about it was with Joel Salatin's meat birds. He went out and saw them in that condition and went right in and got liver from his freezer and fed it. Most of them recovered.

It was a good little piece of info to store away in my "you may need to know this" file.

Bad thing is that the grain-based feeds that most feed chickens can actually cause a problem for the kiddos due to the phytic acid that inhibits absorption.

I believe in Joel's situation he had just changed to a different feed if I recall correctly.

Simz- they look great. D'uccles are my favorite!!

Id have a fit is I saw some one just wandering around our property! Used to have people ask to fish in our ponds, and if they asked it was ok! But now days with the insurance issues, you just can't say yes to everybody. And our ponds aren't very good anymore anyway. But still......

Leah's mom- I have a chick with head twitching. I did go look at the poly stuff at CVS. It's like 12$!!! So I did pick up some different type of chick vita with electrolyte and mineral. I just started it yesterday. Do you think I should also try the poly stuff and the liver too? Or give it a few days to see?

love all the info on here.... You guys are great!!

Ugh, thats my biggest fear is the kids, we have older tractor 3 point equipment in the field we rarely use, all sorts of pointy/stabby stuff. worries me if I see them around it.

I had considered getting his book. I may do it yet! just that small piece of info would have saved 2 of my meaties.

Well the DH went in the chicken room tonight. And was surprised at how much they've all grown. And even though I'd been telling him for 2 weeks that we had to get the cage brooder s ready for the next stage I guess he didn't believe me. Well NOW he does!! So we have a thing on Sat we have to do and Sunday will be build day. Yay!! I'll be glad to have all but the last batch out of the house! And they are ready for more room too! Then I have another area to get ready in the barn to make a second coupe before they can join the big birds. Then as soon as the weather gets in gear we can start my dream coupe!

RE: STOLEN LAVENDER ORPINGTON CHICKENS I am so glad that jchny2000 shared that craigslist posting about the stolen lavender orpingtons! This is a great opportunity for our Indiana group to help. I made a flyer based on the craigslist information that I made into a pdf so that it can be printed on home printers in a better resolution. (I just noticed that I can't add a pdf on this site, so a made a higher resolution jpeg.) I also made a lower resolution web version jpeg for posting on Facebook, websites, etc. I texted the number on craigslist and asked permission to post all of this, and I told her about our Indiana thread and gave her the link. I checked out where Cambellsburg, IN is, and it's near several of our members including Columbus and Paoli. It's not too far from Louisville, so I am emailing a flyer to my sister who lives there to spread the word. No telling where someone might take the flock to be sold or if they keep them, but since they are a more unusual breed, maybe that will be beneficial in people noticing them. If we all --no matter your location in the State-- print out a few flyers and post them at feed or pet stores, auction places, public places-- wherever you think would be a good place, maybe we can help find them. Another plus if we all "flock together" is to show thieves that we aren't going to put up and shut up--- we are going to notify as many people as we can. Let's make this "go viral" and catch these vile thieves!!

Mom~ I will print off a few and take them into seymour and columbus. I have to make a feed run in a day or two anyway. I didn't realize it was so close to me. I had wanted lavenders when I was looking to buy chicks. Maybe its a good thing I didnt. I feel bad for them. Is there a breeder near the poor folks' place? Maybe we can go together and help them start a new flock? Just in case they don't get the other ones back? They are chicken loving hoosiers like all of us.
