INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Just picked up 2 dozen Orpington eggs from a local breeder. I'm basically testing fertility for them. There is a single lemon cuckoo roo and multiple lav Roos over a single buff hen and multiple lav hens. So possibility of mixed colors but hoping for mostly lavenders.

Im in Argos. I am still getting things around before I order my quail eggs but we've already got many of our egg layers.

Still on the fence about exactly which breed I'm going with for our meaties though.


As for quail I'm wanting to have a few eggs as well. Don't know if I want to overwinter them so everyone might go in the freezer

Seeing how quail mature so quickly, I'm not sure if it would be worth it to keep over winter as well.

I received my Meyer Hatchery shipment today! They all arrived safely and have quickly started eating and drinking. I'm wondering if anyone know how to tell a blue laced red wyandotte from the splash (blue) laced red wyandottes. 4 of my 6 are definitely lsplash, but 2 may be blues. I've tried searching and haven't really found anything to help me.

I've lurked this forum for information but just joined recently. North central Indiana native I'm just getting back into chicken keeping after many many years. Along with egg and meat chickens I'm trying quail this year as well.

Hehe, yep, I have a hog that will be going to freezer camp soon, and i keep saying "soon"! He is my first one, and its going to be hard to see him go. They act like a dog! My main flock, I couldn't do it, I have had them since last year. If I keep the mindset from day one who are for the freezer, I do ok on meat birds. We processed 21 last fall, went pretty quick, They were all Cornish cross meaties, not a normal chicken by any means

They are eating machines, don't fall in the coop, you may not make it out alive!

My turkeys come from Meyer next week, really excited to get them! Was hoping to get a call that they were shipping early but no such luck. Once I get them out, it will be time to order the CX again, ugh! They have to be about the messiest to raise. Going to get hoop coops constructed before We get them.

It may be hard to tell on the blues until the feather out more. They sure are a beautiful bird! Seeing the penciled PRs hatching eggs on Ebay, I am really tempted! They are very unusual looking too.

I suppose that craiglist is the best place to keep up with stolen farm property and what people are trying to sell. I don't know anything about those auction places like Dinky's. Maybe a member knows if they are alerted of thefts, kind of like pawn shops are alerted to be on the lookout for stolen merchandise. I just did some Google searches and found several free classified ad services that feature farm animals, equipment, etc. where stolen property could be posted.


If it is approved by jchny2000, I could start a page of Indiana sources that buy/sell farm animals and equipment as well as organizations like 4-H, Indiana Agriculture Resource Council, Purdue Extension Services, and Farm Bureaus. That way, if there is a theft or other issue that relates to these groups, we would have a database to expedite communication.

I volunteered to keep the feed mill page updated, which I must admit that I haven't done because I am behind on my paying job work (it's easy to get sidetracked and spend hours on this site!) Instead of going through everyone's posts looking for Feed Mill info, which could take weeks, I am planning on doing Google searches of Indiana Feed Mills, listing them, and then it would be good if people have comments about certain places, I could list a short comment or list a contact member to PM if someone wants to know further information. (if this is ok with jchny2000). Since I only have five hens, I don't really know much about Feed Mills.

I do plan to get my paying job work caught up so I can update the Indiana info. If anyone has any input about these ideas, please post. Of course, plans will have to be approved before implementing. I just thought we all could brainstorm...

M2H I think any kind of resources gathered in one place is always a great idea

Would be easy to categorize on excel by type, could also be sorted by county, etc.

I have a question for you all. I am looking for GMO free feed for my milking goats and chickens. I didn't know if anyone had a place around Indy within a hour drive that they liked.
