INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Sounds like we are in the same boat. Just starting, just building a coop, etc. You sound like you will have a great first flock as well. I will have to go check out your pics.

I do have easy access to the coop. My dear husband is putting in two 30" doors that will open out. My plan is to wait for the chickens to be in the run and close their coop doors so they can't get in, which will leave me a vacant coop to clean and leave pretty for them to return home. I figure with me and my two kids helping we should be able to get in and get out pretty quickly.

I am eggcited (LOL) to have our first eggs too! I predicted mid early to mid August before we see our first eggs.

Good Luck to you!

Yeah, get the kids involved. Just hope they stay at it! We are plannin on our 2 helping out also. Kyle is 8 and Natalie is 10. She really wants to paint the coop, and I'll let her.

CraftyChick: Thanks! AATH: How old are they? How big is your brooder? Hopefully your brooder is big enough that they can go uder the lamp or back away to not be so hot.
They are about 3 weeks and the brooder is a medium size dog cage. Someone had told me that they are establishing " head of coop" Is there any truth to that?

I had been doing well, only getting our eggies and meaties then I stumbled upon the last bantams at TSC....now to build a coop expansion.

Also, you guys mix your layers and meat birds or do you keep them separate?
I mix all the birds I can unless they are separated for breeding purposes. My australorps, and my Lavender Orps are separate from all the other flocks, for example, so they breed true.

Quick question for everyone. My two chicks keep fighting with eachother. They have food and water and the heat is only about 90. They aren't pecking but they are spreading their wings and running towards eachother. Plus 1 just won't stop cheeping but it's not a distressed cheep. I have sex linked hens but is it possible they could be Roos?
They are fine, its "sparring" part of their social interaction. Hens do it too, so don't worry unless they actually start to harm each other.

Quote: Its hard to find females in the spring! I am still trying myself. (I keep forgetting oberhasli is a swiss alpine) I have my buckling picked out and will get him next month. Egg Newton on here has a female, but i haven't seen her on in a long time.

well after having our home burn I think things are starting to turn around. we had a house on a 3/4 acre lot in the middle of town right next to a church.now we have 10 acres and our new home is in the works. it is possible we will be moving in by this weekend. this past 2 months living in a leaky camper has been very rough but we have made it. we can't wait till it warms up a bit more so we can start putting up some fencing and building new coops.

So glad to hear it! How exciting, having so much land! Glad things are turning around and just in time for spring

Guys, I'm on day 20 with my first batch of silkie eggs and I came home from work to have a few rocking back and forth and peeping. I hope I have babies come morning but I am going to be one nervous chicken mom until they get here. I had 20 make it this far, which really surprised me, being that its my first attempt at hatching. My small flock of 15 is about to double in size. I'll post pictures when they start hatching. So happy, longest 3 weeks of my life.

Hey Julie! (Mother 2 Hens) Would it be possible for you to pass along the information that there is someone in the Bloomington/Indianapolis area who keeps deleting my ads for my stolen flock. I just put a post in both cities, but they won't stay long. Whoever it is, is pretty quick on deleting them. If you can't help, I understand, but anything you can do will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

vickichicki: You can report 'spam' or 'inappropriate' listings on Craigslist and it will delete the posting. I am guessing the thief/s are in that area and do not want people to see that the chickens have been stolen.

Mother 2 Hens: Yes, that's correct. Anyone can "Flag" a post and label it like vickichicki said, and automated software removes the post. I just read through the (very extensive) craigslist terms of use. Although their rules are obviously geared toward criminal activity and advertising spam, there was a few rule that prevents me from posting their Stolen Chickens info and using me as a contact by posting a generic email of mine that doesn't spell out my name, which I use for sites like craigslist.“It is expressly prohibited for any third party to post content to craigslist on behalf of another.” I also found these rules to be stupid: “craigslist is intended and designed as a local service. A user may post content only to the single specific geographic area offered on craigslist.” “The same or substantially similar content may not be posted in more than one craigslist category.” “A user may post the same or substantially similar content no more than once every 48 hours.”
