if my 5 month old chicks combs start to turn red does that mean there a boy??

At 5 mos the girls are starting to become sexually mature too and their combs will redden up. Do you have any photos we could see?

no but ill take some and its like 3-4 of my babys that have a redish comb but flo doesnt so i dont know but ill take pics

Your boys combs should be red by ooh maybe 4-5 weeks old. Your pullets will start getting red in the face/comb around 4-5 months just depends on breed.

My boy was obvious at 1 month old, dark pink comb (see picture taken at 1 month)


At 5 months they all had pinky red combs. Really obvious on the male.
By the time they were laying all of them had deep red coloured combs.

I think the breed depends too.. some hens have rather large combs. Some pictures would definatly help.

Had about an inch of snow this morning, has all melted now. Tarped in my chickens and turkeys, getting ready for it, supossed to hit here around 5pm.

If anyone is interested in reading-up on fermenting feed for your chickens, there is a 3 part series that has basic info that was just posted this week. Each article is pretty short so they're quick to read. Gives a good basic understanding of the why, the "which kind", and the how.

Great reading. Sounds like a good idea. Not sure where I could store something like that without it stinking out the house.
